HOT floor under passenger seat?

I just noticed this and I would like to know if it is normal behavior. I put some items on the floor behind the front passenger seat, and when I removed them after driving, they felt very warm. I felt the floor, and the carpet was very hot under the passenger seat and rear passenger footwell. I looked under the truck and see the exhaust there, but the interior carpet felt abnormally hot. Is there any type of heat shield to combat this, or is the floor supposed to get hot?

There is supposed to be a heat shield above the muffler underneath the floor. I would check to be sure it's still there and hasn't been removed due to someone replacing the muffler or something.

As Steve said, there should be a heat shield over the muffler in that area. but, it is not uncommon for the mounting points on the shield to rust through, and allow the shield to fall down on top of the pipes and rattle. If this happens, someone might have removed it instead of repairing it. But, even if the shield is in place, it can still get warm in that area.

There is a foot heater vent there also, I case you had the heat on?

At the end of the day we are sitting within a machine that runs on combustion of extremely flammable hydrocarbons; all this with about 15 to 20 gallons of the stuff in a tank right under our arsses.
