Houston, we're taking on water......

We had purchased our 2010 sr5 about 45 days ago and all has been well. Today we had the airbag light come on. "great" we said. I searched here and checked the connections under the seats w/o disconnecting. I remembered feeling some water drip on my left foot after a heavy rainstorm.

I investigated and found water in the connections in the kick panel as pictured below. I used air and blew it dry and it'll be drying overnight unplugged.

We all know water falls down, so i kept going up and found more water. I had removed the weatherstripping attached to the frame that runs towards the roof.

I stuck my fingers in there and it was damp.

Before today i don't think we have noticed any wetness anywhere. Today i was applying lexol to the weatherstripping and i wonder if it wasn't pushed back in place properly.

BUT, i am not sure if the white casing that runs in the frame above it would be damp if that was leaking.

What are the chances that it wasn't pushed up properly or that there is a leak in the sunroof?

I have a spool of solder and fed about 3 feet down the driver side drain hole.

The passenger side is dry.


Any suggestions before i take it to the dealer?

I'll have to use the hose tomorrow and wet it down with some force to see if it leaks again.

I will disassemble and reseal tomorrow. I wasn't sure if it was possible since it was an oem rack installed at the factory.

It's either that or your windshield or sunroof are leaking. Those are the only intrusion points that high up

Is there any moisture on your seat belt when you spool it all the way out? If moisture is coming from the roof rack bolts there likely would be. Don't ask me how I know...

The sunroof has drain lines that come out to the back below the taillights. Sometimes the lines can get clogged and cause water to leak. I dont have a sunroof so I am not sure where the drains are but pour some bleach down the drain to help keep them clear.

Previous owner may have had an aftermarket roof rack and switched back to stock upon resale.

It's probably the Sunroof, the windshield, and/or not correctly sealed roof rack bolts (if someone had an aftermarket roof rack installed).

Sunroof is usually the first culprit, these things are just investments in failure. Usually the tubes slip off somehow or the drains get clogged up and start leaking over the frame and into the cabin.

Windshield is another likely culprit, usually the 2nd or 3rd one (1st being factory) leak because the installed did not prep properly.

Roof Rack bolts have seals that sometimes don't get replaced, installed when people put aftermarket units and it could cause a leak.

Thanks all for the help. It dried out overnight and the airbag light went out and all is well for now. We washed the rig tonight too and made sure to keep spraying at the leak points and so far so good.


We will keep an eye on it in the future and post back what we did if there are any issues.

I doubt that the weatherstripping that i was cleaning earlier in the day was the culprit, but was the only reasonable cause since we didn't have any issues before. But i also did run a wire down the front left drainhole a few feet.

No water since. The weatherstripping must have been off or something after i had cleaned it.

It has been dry since.
