How are you liking your BFG KO2s?

How are you liking your BFG KO2s or Cooper ST MAXXs?

I have been looking at picking up some news tires. I have narrowed the the field to two tires.

BFG AT KO2s

Or

Cooper ST MAXX

Both seem to be capable on and off road. The BFGs seem to have the previous versions shadow from their reputation concerning handling water/rain on the roadways hanging over them. I would love to hear someone be able to dispel the notion of this tires poor handling in those conditions. or at least weigh in on how they are handling water and rain. Looks wise, I like the née design, but that's not the main reason to buy tires.

If they haven't changed much, I might consider going with theCooper ST MAXX, or perhaps their new ST Pros that are coming out June 1st.

My 4runner is my DD, so I am on Washington State'so lovely (read crappy ) roads and interstates. I am looking for something aggressive enough to hold its own off road while being solid on pavement in various conditions.

Daily driven with about 1,500 miles on mine so far.

I love the new look of the KO2s, I wouldn't of got them in the old style as I didn't like how "blocky" they looked. I am very glad I got them now with the new design, had them in 1+ foot of snow, mud, rain and they have performed great. But the most thing I was surprised about was that I have ZERO road noise from these tires. They are 100% quiet which I love.

My truck probably sees 70% pavement, 30% off road, and I really think I made the right choice as for my needs.

Edit: I also read that the previous design had pretty bad reviews in the rain, which made me skeptical on these, however I have not had any issues in the rain so far. Now when they get worn down after 20k+ miles, that may change. I don't know.

Been running the ST max 255/85/16's for about six months now and LOOVE them! Great on road characteristics and perform fantastic off road. And built tough as nails. I think each one weighs in at 60ish lbs.

Have you looked at the Nitto Terra Grapplers? Those are what the are putting on the 15 TRD-Pro 4runners. couple people that have bought them here have seemed to like them.

Although you will need a 17 to run on the Terra grappler g2

You can run the Terra grappler (non g2) on 16s

Cool. It sounds like both tires are very capable and the people running them seem to like them. For the time being, I might run with 265/75/16s. I would like to run a lift, but had some other expenses come up, so the SS 1.2 might have to wait a little longer. I have to say that I really dig the look and functionality of the 255/85/16s in the Coopers. The BFGs don't offer the KO2s in that size, so if I wanted a larger tire, I would have to get the 285/75/16s. Which isn't bad, but it would require further changes like getting wheels with correct backspacing.

I have, what appears to be, some fairly old Michelin LX tires, so whatever direction I go will probably be an improvement.

I will look into the Nittos.

I've ran several sets of the original BFG KOs and liked them, as well as mud terrains. Always been a BFG guy but this afternoon I am getting ST Maxxs put on and then heading out on a weekend long wheeling/camping trip, so I'll let you know what I think!

I will be buying a set of KO2s for my 5th gen though.

I have about 2,000 miles on my KO2's now, in 265/75R16. I daily drive on them. I have not done any aggressive off-roading, but have enjoyed some higher speed dirt road and beat up dirt road driving. Absolutely no issues on or off road with mine. It's a very predictable tire. They definitely feel softer than a highway tire, but they're an all-terrain tire so that's to be expected.

I'm still working to find the sweet spot for best pressures on-road. Great looking tire too, if you're concerned with that. I am a bit.

I bought mine on promo from a large membership-only warehouse-like company (a COST COmpany, if you will) @ $189 per tire.

Has anyone compared Duratracs to K02's?

These were my top two choices as well. I've been running BFG KOs for the past 7 years and they have about 60k miles on them now, so I'm looking for a new set. I've never had Duratracs, and I think I've decided to give them a try.

I actually just talked to a tire shop this morning (a place that sells "discounted" tires). They did a price match for me at $196 /tire for LT285/75/16s - load range E. Plus they have a promo this weekend for $100 off when you buy a set of 4. Which makes it more like $171 /tire. Not going to complain about that.

255/85-16 STmaxx on SCS F5s freshly installed. Tires are really good looking, deep tread and are pretty quiet on the road. Taking a camping/wheeling trip this weekend and I'll be able to give more input on performance.

On my 4th day in moab with them they are awesomes. Running at 24 pounds and just crawlong all over everthing. No problems in the rain so far. But even with yhe kos it was mainly only when toy had like 40 k on them that they started acting like slicks.

Course im out here with someone that has the st maxxs and they are doing fantastic as well...

I think the moral of the story is that you can't really go wrong with either of these tires for your intended use.

I personally hate the bfg at's as they instantly turn to slicks in anything muddy. However, I run a lot of very rocky and muddy trails that require a full on MT. I do pay the price through increased road noise, reduced fuel economy, etc. I've never ran a set of coopers so I can't comment on them

I'm surprised by this forum not mentioning the Goodyear Adventure AT tires. They replaced the silent armor, and have Kevlar so you can get them to really low PSI. I have them on my 3rd gen. They are super quiet on road and very good off road.

I also like the Nittos on my Pro but you can still hear a faint hum above 65 MPH. I decided against the duratracs due to noise complaints. I got the Adventure AT due to increased mileage warranty vs other brands.

Had a set of BFG KO1 on when I bought the truck with 110k, won't get another set due to the noise when the tread got low. I had about 3/32 left and ditched them. Got LTX AT2 and they were horrible in the snow, won't get another set ever. The Adventure is awesome in the snow.

I had the KO2's for a couple years and I wasn't a fan. Sure they are super aggressive but they were loud and gave my car horrible gas mileage. I switch to the Nitto Terra Grapplers last year and I ****ing love them! It was night and day difference. No more loud highway noises and I noticed my mileage definitely go up! They grip really well too! If you're looking for a DD style tire I would definitely recommend the Nitto's!
