How bad would be 31x10.5 for the mileage

I have 1991 4runner V6 5spd manual 4wd

I currently have 225/75/15 and I need new tires

I wouldn't mind going 31x10.5

but what about mileage will it drop a lot ?

any experience?

I don't know what MPG you get but on my V6/auto I get about16-18 MPG on 31's

you would do better with the 5-spd depending on your driving habits:

i didnt really notice when i put them on, but the previous owner did some gear work on it so really mine isnt good judgement. but honestly it wont make a huge deal.

are you going all terrain or mud?

Those are the tires that I have, and I get 17 if I'm not trying to conserve gas. I was coming back from Sacramento today and I wasn't worrying about making good time. Driving abou 60 and "drafting" a little bit behind trucks, I got over 20. I have a '92, 3.0, and 5 speed.

i recently drove my 93 4runner auto/3.0 on a 3000 mile trip and never got better than 15mpg on 31x10.50's

i think i got 240 miles to a tank

i just switched out to 32x11.50's and now i get 160-200 miles to a tank.... depending on hills/ac/power mode/etc

well, I carry my motorcycle on a rail in the back and when I go through fireroad for $40 more I took the piece of mind.

to me it makes sense .

One thing that a lot of people get confused with milage and bigger tires is that even though the numbers may say your milage is down it may actually be up.

Don't forget that the speedometer is off now, which will make your milage look worse.

If you do a lot of highway driving it may actually go up - if you recalibrate your speedo and drive the same speed dur to the lowered engine rpm at same speeds. With 32's on my truck the speedometer is roughly 10% off now. So likewise, the milage I would figure would also be 10% off.

If you do a lot of hard city and offroad driving, I can see it going down...

I never clocked mine before I put the tires on so I can't really say. That and I never recalibrated my speedo either.

I always just figured that the bigger tires looked better and were worth a slight increase in operating costs to have on there.

I've got 31x10.5's on a '95 3.slow auto and I've never seen better than 15mpg, but every trip I've ever taken starts with me driving from Denver straight up into the mountains so I spend a lot of time at 5000 rpms at the top of 2nd gear struggling to keep up with traffic. On the flats I could probably get 18mpg.
(And yes, that's accounting for the speedo/odo error). I think if I could get a few more ponies somewhere and stay out of 2nd gear, mileage would improve a bit.
