How common is a bent spindle

Bringing this back from the dead.

Does anyone have a good image of how the spindle bent? Meaning in what orientation did it fail?

I've been planning to gusset my spindles after going up a size to 34" tires. But I would like to better understand the mode of failure of the OEM spindle first. I think a bolt-on gusset could be built that would save me the effort of removing the spindles to weld on them. Also I would rather keep low profile and/or reversible so I can still run OEM wheels without spacers if I want.

I also don't love the idea of welding on them and creating heat affected zone that would possibly be prone to failure. I think that's where the cracking is occurring. I don't have a proper forge/oven to pre-heat them and anneal them in a controlled way. The best I can do myself is to warm, weld, then heat with a torch and redneck anneal by cooling in sand. It might work well enough. It's better than nothing. But it's not ideal. It may not even be necessary. I just have no idea what type of steel they are. I can't say for certain that they're forged or cast, but I'm pretty sure they're forged.

Since I have KDSS I believe I can use the sway bar hole as a primary attachment point for a small truss design that would also bolt on at each end and provide significant additional rigidity. The base area needs some thought on how best to attach it, but I think it's at least possible do.

I had also thought about possibly just using carbon fiber to gusset them. For me - that would be the easiest by far. If I can just wrap the upper portion with a few mm thick carbon/epoxy, that would be great. I already have all the stuff to do that leftover from another project. I'm just not sure if it's a viable solution here. The problem is that you don't know until it's too late. And Carbon tends to be extremely rigid until it fails catastrophically. Not really a great property in this use.

I may be overthinking a simple gusset. I just don't want to have any issues with them.

So... does anyone have a good idea of what orientation or direction they tend to bend in?

This is about the only thing I've found. Is it representative of everyone's bent spindle?

Just FYI, my spindle was not bent....

I still have not gusseted them, but have the gusset kit ready to go, just never gotten around to it.

I would just buy the kit from TC and not waste time on trying to come up with something. It's pretty cheap if you can weld... just time consuming to deal with a cast spindle.

Thanks for the response. You're probably right about going with a tried and true option.

If you haven't bent yours - I'm probably just fine without them. Visually the 5th gen spindle looks like an improvement over the Tacoma in pictures, but I've never seen the two side by side. And it also seems rare to hear about them - although it does seem to happen on occasion.

Guys, I am looking to pick up a set spindle from the junk yard and weld some spindles gussets. Does anyone know if the 4th gen spindle fit a 5th gen? for sure the 2010 to 2017 have mostly if not all the same part mechanically, right?

I ask, becasue when I search on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market, I put in the year 2010 because 2010-2017 are the same, but the search show 2007 as well, and they look like they are the same. I have a 2016.

All the same for the spindle. Lower control arms are slightly different.
 
Had the truck shop in SD put on their own spindle gussets, which is pretty THIIIICCCCCCC...

Wish I could take better pictures but I only have a potato.

did your SDHQ brckets not work on the rear abs sensors? the bolts they sent me were too long. front ones worked fine.

they worked. If i remember correctly, the package came with 2 sets of bolts. One didn't work (dont remember if it was too short or too long) but the other set bolted up correctly. It was a while back, so i dont remember what the problem was..i do remember i had to do it twice and I was cursing alot. Maybe i flipped the rear and front bolts..but i didn't have to contact sdhq to fix it. I just lied on my back staring up at it, and scratched my head for a while and then decided to try different ways to get it to work (not following directions).

i read the directions. twice. then got it threaded in and it had 1/4" of threads still showing. took it out and said F it. and F SDHQ lolol:lmao:
