How Deep?

I'm going to keep this simple and short. How deep in water can my stock 99 SR5 go before it stops? Thanks.

Im not sure exactly how deep you can go safely but I would say anything that is deep enough so water is coming over your hood is too deep. Other than that if you keep the car moving forward i think you might be ok.

no water in air intake

take a look under the hood and see where your air intake is -front left as you are facing the grill


Do not get water all the way up to this point or you will risk sucking water into your engine.

This would be a very bad thing.

If you are into deep water crossings, then you likely should explore a snorket set up. They are made for third gens-

see "RoorRunner" for pictures- he just did one and as with all his mods it looks outstanding.

Thanks for the reply, yeah I do not want water comming into my vehicle so water over the hood is too much lol. I am mainly asking because my friends who all drive jeeps want to go into the water becaues of the high water levels from the snow. I want to go into 1.5 feet of water max.

watch the splash- you should be fine

18 inches is not going to be a problem but still be aware of splashing reaching to your hood level.
If you have done the deckplate mod-be sure to put in the deckplate.
If you have not done the mod-you may want to do so, so the airbox is "sealed up".

Not trying to scare you off, but I learned the day after I cut up my airbox that Toyota gets a lot of money for them, the figure $800 was mentioned to me. I checked a local wrecking yard and their figure was $130 or $140.

Now I don't think you will screw up your airbox, but I would not want you doing a mod just because I said so.

I am not a mechanic and not even mechanically inclined and most of what I know about these 3rd gens is from these forums.

Research it out and so on-there are a lot of good instructions here and on YotaTech for the deckplate mod.

Thanks a lot. I will more than likely not be doing the mod myself lol. I am very much not a mechanic and I always ask for help from my friends who drive jeeps to help me lol.

don't forget about water getting to diff and xfer case breathers.

Keeping a steady pace through water is the key if it's deeper than say your lower door since if you stop water may seep in past the door seasl so for me I get nervous when the water is up to my rocker panel.

Also remember to have a breather extender for the rear diff or you'll end up with water in there too.
