Chrome thing. Ha ha. Proper terminology, aside, I've been there and had it off. It wasn't fun to remove though... You should really have someone else there to help. You're gonna have to remove the rear hatch panel from inside. That's not hard. Unscrew the bolt holding the pull down strap, then pop off the panel by pulling. I didn't mention, but you need to have the window up. It's then a matter of squeezing the clippies that hold the panel on, and pushing them through their holes. This is where your helper comes in. They will hold the panel from coming back and clipping itself back in. You've got to find all those clippies from inside. I used needle nosed pliers to squeeze some of the hard to get ones. After you've removed it from the tailgate, unplug the wires for the light, and you're done.
You might wanna take some of the others' advice, and just mask the tailgate and paint from there. It was a crappy job getting that off, and I also broke one of the plastic rivets holding the inside panel on the tailgate.
Good luck!
