How do you acknowledge another 4Runner owner?

This came up in another recent thread, so I figured I'd make a separate thread out of it.

Seems that folks on this site and others who are really into their trucks like to acknowledge other 4Runner owners when they encounter them on the road.

So what do you all do to acknowledge another 4Runner owner when you see them, and what have others done to acknowledge you?

I usually wave unless it's a really great looking rig or she's real cute, then I gawk/drool depending on which is appropriate.

Since my lift I get a lot more waves and gawking by all 4x4 owners. Amazing.

I don't really acknowledge 4runner owners around me because they don't look very friendly. I do however look for a t4r.org sticker and if I find one I sure as hell am going to wave or something.

I do however notice that most 4runner owners check out each other's rides while driving around.

not to say all 4runner owners are "not-friendly" but a lot around here (common problem to VA drivers) is that they drive it because they need something to drive and after a long day of work they couldn't careless that there is even human life around them.

I usually wave or toss a thumbs up. I don't get a whole lot of response, but I do anyway!

No other T4R.ORG stickers here...yet. But I do keep an eye out myself for one travelling thru! ~LOL~


As far as the AK47 waving about in the land of LA...I like the big .308's myself: HK91 or a Fn-FAL.

I usually wave or give a thumbs up if they are next to me. If the driver looks friendly, I give a slight beep of the horn to get their attention. In parking lots, I always look for spots near other 4Runner's. I don't care how far out they are!! The coolest thing that happend to me was when I was on Route 18. There were two lanes for regular traffic and a lane where you could only turn left. The light was red and in all the lanes, there were 4th gen 4Runner's as lead cars. The guy next to me waved and was very friendly but the other driver didn't even realize it.

One time I had another SR5 pull up next to mine to check out my wheels. I have the 17" rims but all the SR5's around here are equipped with 16's. Another time, my twin (Pacific Blue SR5 V6) actually chased me down to give me a thumbs up and then sped off...

If I see one, I'll usually pull up to them and look at them and if they look back, I'll wave, but nobody really cares around here...

That's because of your grill guard. The second I put on my bull bar I got a lot more looks. IMO it seems like most people don't notice my other exterior mods. Maybe the taillight trim and now the shackle hitch........but the one I noticed the stares from is the bull bar. Maybe because it is on the front end and that is where I can most easily see the heads turning.

I actually have received questions / comments on my tint 1 day after it was installed.

Makes me happy people are noticing however I hope the local police do not show as much interest as some other SUV owners have shown.

most t4r owners around me seem like family type people. hate to say it but its pretty much the minivan crowd who are trying to look cool despite their 8+ kids jumping around and clawing all over them that own 4runners.

i'm the exception' i'm the 31 yr old single guy trying to look cool...

sounds like the Jeep Wave to me...

Waving to other 4Runner owners is like the Jeep wave (invented back in the 70's). Most people now ignore it (or don't have a clue it exists), but every time a Jeep (CJ or YJ) pass another Jeep the drivers will wave at one another (we used to ignore the plushier jeeps like WJ's, XJs, etc)

We gotta come up with something cooler than a wave... Afterall, this is a 4Runner, not a Jeep...

But I am just trying to set an example of being friendly. This is something that seems to be missing these days. Only one person has waved back so far. Usually they stare at me really hard. They must be thinking “Do I know this person”. They have no clue.

You'd fit right in in many states. There are still places that's it's considered polite to wave at any passing vehicle. It's very much that way in Iowa and once you get outside the bigger cities, it's still that way in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas and others. When driving out driving "in the county" and you pass a vehicle (especially a pickup) and you can see that person has their hand on top of the steering wheel, you're going to get a finger wave. (not that finger) It's considered polite. Now this does not apply if it's a woman driving the vehicle coming at you. They don't want to appear "forward", UNLESS you are WAY off the beaten track, then they also wave.

I've seen this change over the years. People are still very friendly here but it's changed a lot in the bigger cities here.

IMO
I can't really see myself waving at 4th gens because lets face it, or atleast near me, soccer moms get the v8 because she wants the most powerful one. They buy it for different reasons; luxury and seating capacity, but for most of them it could say Yotota and they wouldn't really notice.
The only way I'd acknowledge a 4th gen is if they show interest in the truck by modding it for offroad and if they have at least enough knowledge about the runner history to realize that mine is one as well, cause if they don't have any mods then 90% of them are people who don't know what we love about what they have. Similar to 3rd gen owners, but it happens less than with the new model.
When it comes to 1st gens and 2nd gens, it comes to become more of a collectors car. And i don't mean collectors like a mustang 64 1/2, i mean more like a car that you get because its cheap and you come to appreciate it, and its more than just a 1-7k car, eventhough its barely worth the maintenance/tires/gas mileage.

I park in a lot with another 2nd gen same color, same year, similar mods, and I've parked next to him three or four times, and he's done the same. Its funny that way... mutual respect.
but mine's better anyway, his is like mine sans the aux lights, gguard, taillightguards, aggressive tires, and... stickers, but he's got a 5-speed, I'll give him that much.
