I don't think Michael Vick was at all right to do what he did, but growing up in semi-rural Virginia I can tell you all that dogfighting happens every weekend in a lot of small towns. It's a cultural thing that I think people are still under the impression that it's an isolated event that Vick was associated with. The difference was that Vick was rich, and so it was on a bigger scale.
I discussed the Stallworth issue at length with someone this weekend, and it's an interesting one. He was drunk and killed a person with a car. Is that a more socially acceptable crime than killing dogs? Or is it that it happens more frequently and there isn't the outrage?

Stallworth did a terrible crime, my soon-to-be brother-in-law was buried this morning, marriage was set for next month, the victim of a drunk driver. I've been thinking about this and feel the difference was intent, the drunk driver, while being an idiot, didn't plan on killing him. Vick's crime, while not as horrific, was intentional and ongoing.

I tutored his brother a bit at Tech and this was a lesson he never learned. Hopefully Mike knows that the first DUI or arrest or anything and he's going to be in a lot of trouble.

If Vick was barred from playing again in the NFL, people would say an example is being made of him. Depending on the crime and age of the person, some things are inexcusable and no second chance should be given.
There was a show on Animal Planet last night, Animal Witness: The Michael Vick Case that discussed dog fighting and the particular incident. After seeing the footage of what goes on, how the dogs are treated, I wouldn't argue if a second chance wasn't given to Vick. Fortunately some of those dogs were rehibilatated and are adopted in loving homes.

If a player commits a felony where another person or animal is harmed they should be banned.
Playing is a privilege. they abused it. Good luck in their next career. The dumb ass who killed a man while driving drunk gets a year off...........what kind of example is that? can children learn from that? Spin their head around. Many of the doctors where I have worked will kick a jerk out of the ER teach them a lesson. This is a tough world. Giving these flagrant felons a slap on the wrist is offensive.

While I'm not condoning what stallworth did I think there is a little bit to be said about his character. First of all, he blew a .126 at the scene of the accident. Over the limit and unacceptable by all means, but I would be willing to bet there are a number of people in this thread that have driven somewhere around or over that very same BAC. Again, what he did was wrong, but the man killed was running across the road NOT in a crosswalk. Stallworth did not drive off the road and hit him. After the accident he called the police on himself, apologized countless times to the family and the NFL, and cooperated fully with the legal system. He got off easy in terms of jail time but you can blame that on the prosecution for accepting money instead of jail time.
People make mistakes man. It's ashamed that this one claimed someones life but people deserve the proper rehabilitation and a second chance.
With Vick its slightly different. First of all I do believe he has done his time and served his punishment. He went from being the highest paid QB in the NFL to being basically broke. I love dogs as much as a lot of people in this thread but some of you need to realize that dogs aren't humans. Dog fighting and what happened to the dogs that lost is a terrible, heinous thing... but you do your time and you should get a second chance at whatever you want to do.
To the guy who compared dog fighting to MMA. Let me know when someone makes YOU get in the octagon with someone you don't even want to fight, and then electrocutes you for losing. Then maybe we can draw a comparison.

Well said.......just like Mike Tyson.....once a thug; always a thug. Vick was one of the most exciting things to happen in the Falcons organization in many many years, but I knew right away....something was fishy. Dealing/using drugs....pimping, something illegal/immoral. I KNEW there was something from the very beginning. Too bad.

Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree. It's so easy to judge people whom you cannot even begin to relate to isn't it. Again, I don't want to condone what Vick did but I'd imagine it can be a little difficult sometimes when you are the highest paid quarterback in the NFL at what 24 or 25 years old. Its unfortunate but the world we live in, the prominent athletes in the country get away with mostly whatever they want, whenever they want and sometimes I'd imagine the line that you wouldn't normally cross can become a little bit harder to realize. Maybe Vick will always be a "thug" but he should at least be given a chance first. After all isn't that what our judicial system is about. Should everyone who gets convicted of a crime just be put to death and cleared from society. I sure as hell don't want to pay for them to sit in prison for the rest of their life so what do you do? It's about rehabilitation and second chances.
