How do you remove XREAS?

Sorry to jack an old thread, but I hated to open a new one just because I couldn't find my answer. And I have a lot of time in this search for answers! I just bought a used lift from a member on here (thanks 10mile) and I'm weighing my options about installing it ASAP or waiting until my XREAS craps out, because I love the ride and handling. My questions are this:

1: Is it possible to reinstall XREAS once you've removed it, say I were to change my mind about the new ride after discarding XREAS?

2: In general (since I haven't included the specs of my new springs/lift/etc), have very many people removed their XREAS and regretted it? I did find one person on here that was very detailed about regretting their desicion to remove the XREAS and had to buy a new system and instal it with Daystar spacers once they realized their regrets.

1. Yes, if removed correctly.

2. No. If they remove it, most likely theres a reason; either due to shock failure or lift. Bilstein 5100's ride similar to stock, so ive heard.
 
1. Yes, it's possible, but I really wouldn't count on it. I followed the instructions and still lost some fluid. Loss of fluid means ruined system.
2. Don't miss mine. As Casper pointed out, most were replacing a failed system anyway though.

How many miles on your stock suspension? You could always disassemble the front and install the spacer on your xreas shocks. Not sure how well the rear coils would work with the stock shocks, may need a spacer there until you get aftermarket ones (1.5" rear spacer is under $40).

Yes. Just remove the shocks. Leave interconnecting lines and reservoir attached to the truck frame. Cover the connections to protect them from debris. If you change your mind then its just a matter of reinstalling the shocks and reconnecting the connectors.

For the one that you found who regretted it, you'll find a hundred (if not more) who didn't regret it. I respect his decision and won't second guess it. I removed my xreas system at 5k miles and replaced it with Icon suspension components. The difference was night an day in both ride and handling. I would never go back to the xreas. I gave my front CO's to another member and threw the lines in the dumpster.

Thanks, great input here! My stock set up is a 2006 with 109k miles. So, many would say my days are numbered as far as having good, leak free system. However I'm in the SE USA and see no snow or road salt so they could feasibly see another 100k, or they could crap out tomorrow. I was originally going to get the Daystar 2.5/1.5 kit, but I got a fair deal on this used kit so I thought I'd give it a try. I just don't want to do it if I am guaranteed to ruin the XREAS by removing it. Looks like it is possible maybe to preserve it if I want to reuse it. The used kit is just a Toytec front spacer with Bilsteins on factory coils and the rear Toytec lift springs. I need to get rear shocks and the previous owner ran the ProComp's and was happy. Not sure which I'll get. I'm waiting for more research until I put more money in that set up.
 
You are headed in the right direction. I agree, no telling when your xreas could go. What condition are your current tires in? You'll need an alignment after the install. If your current tires are pretty worn, you may consider waiting on the install until time for new tires. Stock sized tires (assuming that's what you have) will look odd with the 3/2 lift. I'd probably go with 5100 rears, they'll best match the fronts.

That's another issue. My current tires are in great condition, I can't justify getting rid of them at this point. They are the stock 265/65-17's so yes, they probably would look silly. I did get some spacers from another member so I was hoping to offset the silliness of small tires by pushing them out some. Might not work. I'll look into the 5100's for the rear. I'm not thinking the fronts are 5100's though, they are yellow. Did they ever make yellow 5100's?
 
No, the front's aren't 5100's. They're OEM Toyota shocks, not sure what they're off of. Possibly a Tacoma? They're not 4runner or FJ shocks. They are made by Bilstein though, 5100's should be a good match.

I replaced it with the Toytec Ultimate lift which includes the 5100's all around and I was surprised to find that can barely tell the difference from the XREAS. Off road it made a huge difference though and I don't regret it. If you just plan to only drive paved roads or mild trails you should be fine keeping the Daystar and XREAS but if you want to do serious trails with rocks etc. you'll will start to immediately feel the limitations on the system. Thats the only reason I did the change so early.

Well, I'm in Central Florida where we have limited to no hills or good trails, maybe I will get a Daystar 2.5/1.5 for now. Too many options! Thanks everybody for your input.
 
OK guys I just picked up a 2004 Limited and it has XREAS but it does not have RAS.

In the next 12 months, I want to install new shocks and possibly new coils.

I've read through the "removing XREAS" threads and it seems like most people who remove the system try to do so in a way that will retain the usefulness of the system. Maybe they'll use it again in the future, or maybe they'll sell it for cash...

Let's assume that I don't give a rat's ass about the XREAS system and I just want it gone. I will never use it again. It is safe to assume that I can just disconnect the shocks and leave the rest of the system in place? It's a self-contained system, right? So when the oil all runs out, it's gone and it won't affect anything else on the vehicle, right? So I could disconnect the shocks, tie up the XREAS lines with zip ties, and install new shocks and be done with it?

Right? Or am I missing something?
 
I'm going to remove mine this spring and I plan on removing all the plumbing.

Based on what I've read removing it with hopes of selling it more wishful thinking than reality. Just remove it an toss like I'm going to.

We all know that zip tie will break at the least opportune time and screw up something else...
 
I wouldn't care if the zip tie broke or not. The only purpose for it would be to get the shock lines out of my sight. :) I don't see the reason for taking the time to remove the entire system. As long as it's safe to unhook the shocks and let the fluid drain out... I'll be ready to go. I'll pop in the new shocks and leave the XREAS system in place.

I'm just trying to confirm that you can indeed do this and the XREAS oil does not get used for anything else on the vehicle.
 
Doing it the correct way, will prevent pressurized fluid from spraying all over the place.

In theory you could lift opposite corners up, remove the tires to let the suspension droop. Then disconnect the lines at the valves. Then you could remove the Xres shocks/springs, replace them with aftermarket.

Repeat the process for the opposite pairs. (ie drivers front, passenger rear)

If you are going to remove the shocks, it doesn't take much more effort to remove the rest of the system.

Think 2-3 bolts hold the center valve to the frame rail, Then a series of plastic clips hold the plumbing in place.

Once the install shop installed the shocks / springs, I was able to remove the rest of the system in about 30 minutes without having to lift the truck at all.
 
I'm getting bilsteins all around on tuesday and the xreas removed. I asked my mech to keep it intact for me. Is there any market for good condition xreas systems? How much do they go for? Thanks
