How do you remove XREAS?

None that I've heard of. Most once removing it never look into a used set-up to replace it. I like most everyone here just eliminated it and replaced it with the FJ coils and 5100's combination and have no regrets.. Reasons most folks that remove it for though are A. because X-REAS already failed(expensive to replace) B. want a tad more off road capability C. 5100's are at least just as good if not better.
 
Bilstein 4600 Swap

I actually just replaced my X-REAS system (107k miles) with Bilstein 4600 Heavy Duty shocks this past weekend. I got the full set from shockwarehouse.com for 300 bucks. I just ripped out the old system and chucked it because it was old and I didn't want to deal with it ever again. I think X-REAS is a good idea but the execution left something to be desired considering if you lose a shock, you lose a strut as well; that and it’s not the best off-road. The 4600's did increase my ride height substantially but I think that they will settle out over time. As far as the ride quality, the 4600's felt and perform much better off-road and they do quite well on the pavement aside from a slight increase in body roll. Needless to say I don’t miss the ticking time bomb that is X-REAS.

Hey T4R land I bumping this zombie thread because even with searching I have not been able to answer my question and my account is so new I can't post a new thread.

Quick back story-my new to me 05 V8 Sport is for my new company and it's job is to pull a trailer while being toyota reliable for the next 2 years+ it will not be going off road. I know this accounts to hearsay around here but this truck is more toaster than toy, it has one job to do and it better do it well!

But I digress...I having a leaking X-REAS system and it needs to be thrown in the trash. I have no intention of lift kits, remote res coil-overs or anything like that (for now... don't worry once the company is able to buy it's replacement we will be talking super chargers and super swappers). Can I pull off the X-REAS shocks and replace with just a conventional set of shocks and struts and keep the existing springs?

Ju1cE82, keep the original springs and swap in new shocks for the rear and coil-over shocks for the front. Make sure the front ABS sensor harnesses don't stretch or it's $60+ each just for the parts.

If you want to stay OEM, you can buy the OEM rear shocks and front coil-overs for a straight SR5 (no XREAS). Since the SR5 and the Sport use the same springs, that will give you a factory SR5 ride when you're done.
 
I am in much the same boat. I have a 2008 Sport model, located 2000 miles away in Flagstaff , AZ. My son has been driving it out there for college. I'm getting ready to fly there in May and help with the drive back east. He took the 4R into a local foreign car shop that seems to get generally good reviews. They found that both XREAS shocks are leaking. My son is a brilliant college student, not so mechanically inclined. The truck has only about 100K miles on it and is in great shape otherwise.

He is not really an offroader, mostly pavement and light dirt roads and we want this to be safe, functional and in proper shape to tow a light UHaul back in May. And done well before I fly in the day before we load him up. There aren't a ton of decent looking shops in Flag, there is a Toyo dealer and this shop he has been working with. What are some thoughts about this? I also have a stock 2005 SR5 and find the suspension perfectly acceptable.

I would just have whatever shop you and him are going to use, remove the system and install normal replacement shocks/struts along with the stock spring. Its very expensive to replace parts on that system.
 
My Xreas is coming off for coilovers in front(Bilstein 6112) and bilstein 5100s shocks in the rear with Eibach coils as well in the rear, will give it a 1.5 lift.

Quick clarification: Are the rear springs the same and fronts different? You mention new shocks (for rear) and new coil - overs (front). My preference would be to swap out the strut cartridge and re-install with the existing spring up front instead of aftermarket coil - overs. Not sure if it was a typo or if coil over and strut are used interchangeably on here.

You're talking about the same thing. There is confusing terminology on this board for what to call the front shock without the spring. Some call it a coil-over, some call it a strut, some call it a shock that a spring mounts on. Whatever the term, you re-use your coil springs and install them on a new shock, one that doesn't have the XREAS plumbing. Unless you really know what you're doing, you'll have to have that professionally done, since assembling coil-over struts can be dangerous without the proper equipment and know-how.

The rears go in just like any other set of shocks. Easy DIY.

In my world the front suspension dampener (on these trucks) is a McPherson strut, wouldn't be a coil over until there is adjustable height threaded collar....but I digress.

I will go-ahead and dig into it but I was an ASE tech in my former years. Agree not for the weekend diy'er

Hopefully in the next month I'll be yarding out My X-reas in my 05 V6 Ltd, Gonna install 5100's front & rear With OME 2884 Springs in the front keeping the rear springs stock for now. Does this sound like a good setup to all you?

Technically a McPherson Strut is not what these trucks utilize. A McPherson Strut is a suspension set-up where the strut itself is treated like an extension of the spindle. The strut top mounts into the body and has a top plate that rotates as the wheel is turned (very common on almost every passenger vehicle found on the road these days.)

Our vehicles use what's referred to as a "Dual Wishbone" design with the strut being sandwiched between the two control arms and being separate from the spindle. The tops do not rotate like a McPherson strut as they do not need to twist when the wheel is turned.

A "Strut" is basically what we consider a "coilover", it is a compact assembly with the spring seated over the shock. Most people call them struts, but coilover is acceptable as well, what we as a community often refer to as "coilovers" is short hand for "Adjustable CoilOver" that has a perch that can adjust the ride height, but in reality any strut can be called a coilover, just not all of them are adjustable.

front will be higher than the rear in that case. Once i remove the Xreas im going the 883/895e route. Cant wait

Last night I installed Monroe OESpectrum on all 4 corners and recently installed Moog sway bar bushings. Ride quality is awesome for a truck this size, smoother than my DD, granted that's a hammered Jetta on FK springs and Koni orange.

I am already happy with the purchase (less than $250 in suspension from rockauto and currently a rebate) if it rides this good for 40K I will be ecstatic!
