Front brake lines connected to caliper without losing compression in brake lines?

Depress the pedal and be damn sure it doesn't come up at all but you'll still have to bleed the brakes after you disconnect the line. What are you trying to do?

I was going to paint my calipers. But I ended up just covering everything up and just painting them still attached

if you need them off its better to just take them off and re bleed.
its good to rebleed every once in a while anyway.

brakes are referred to as a static hydraulic system. there is no pressure until you press the pedal. you can not 'open' the system without allowing air in. air is compressible, brake fluid is not. so, to answer your question, no. any time you remove any brake component that is part of the fluid system you MUST bleed them to get all air out or you WILL have brake failure at some point. its pretty easy to do, really.

Completely unnecessary if your brake system is in good shape, it's a good idea to change brake fluid every few years however.

What do you mean by "rebleed"? If you're saying to just bleed your brakes every once in a while then thats a waste of time, if you mean flush the brake system completely then you're absolutely right.
