How do you replace console lights?

I need to replace the light bulbs in my console that illuminate the area that shows outside temp, mpg, a/c, etc. How do you get to the bulbs to replace them? Can you use LED bulbs so that they don't need replacing again?

White or colored LED's?

I wanted to replace the bulbs in the LCD display to make it brighter and the NEO4 from Superbright LEDs sounds like a good choice but they don't seem to be available in white, just "cool white" that looks green. Has anyone else tried the different colored ones? I suppose green or blue would be OK too but I'm not sure which would look best. I'd rather have white.
BTW, to make the display a little brighter there is a white plastic piece about 1" square behind the lamp that can be removed so it doesn't block so much light. It's really tedious to remove without breaking the LCD though.
Also, to replace the small lamps in most of the other indicators you can use micro miniature lamps from Radio Shack, #272-1092 that cost $2 for 2 lamps. They don't have the larger ones for the LDC display though.
 
Ditch those horrible bulbs once and for all for around $12.

I used Radio Shack super bright white leds with 560 ohm resistors. Used nail polish to color them after roughing them up opaque with sandpaper. Had to flatten some of the leds with a dremel to fit through the sockets. Used a sharpie to mark the anode.

Used florescent orange for most of the leds and they came out nice albeit with some bright spots here and there in the finished product. I used a aqua blue/light blue for the information panel and it looks nice with some needed contrast from all the orange in the dash if I do say so myself. My daughter thinks I should have used purple : )

This jumbled mess in the photo is actually much easier than trying to solder or fit little led bulbs into the existing sockets. I just soldered a pair of wires at one single 12V socket and made that wire pair my trunk line with exposed points along the line to tie in the resistors in parallel. The info panel sockets are only 6 volt so don't use those.

Each resistor/led has a black and red pigtail. The pigtail ties into the trunk line. Using a separate 12V power source I was able to fit the led's into their sockets and orient them before securing with a glob of hot glue. When all tested slather some glue all around to protect the solder points and you are done.

The finished result is much brighter than stock and will not burn out in this lifetime.
