How does you 4Runner ride?

Im bringing this thread back up as I recently went from my Performance Products coils with KYB shocks to the front TRD Tundra set up and rear Lc set up. Front TRD coils with oem Toyota/Bilsten shocks. Rear LC 7.75 wraps with oem Tokico LC shocks.

My ride is a bit better than before. Very SLIGHTLY softer than before. Very stable. It still feels like riding in a wagon when you hit a good sized bump. I.e. when I cross a set of railroad tracks I still get a lot of feedback and "jitters" as my truck is affectionately named. But I think that has more to do with some remaining front end loosness than the actuall suspension. My guess is I need to do the steering column mod.

I know there are many with the TRD/LC set up, and many of you have commented. Anyone else with this (or any other) set up want to chime in?
 
I love how mine rides, and I never feel like I'm going to flip when I take a corner too quickly, I usually lose traction before I start to get body roll. BUT, when my 4runner was in the shop for a week, I drove a Corolla, and going back to the 4runner is SO much rougher, but I like it. And it's nice being up so much higher.
 
id say im definitely in the >6 range my truck is mostly stock i assume, where should i start when trying to get rid of this jittery bumb steer problem? i have some poly swaybar and steering bushings from wheelers ready to install, inner and outer tierods next?

This Old Man Emu suspension is very stiff. The truck is almost 17 years old, there are lots of rattles.
 
Mine is #1 way soft. 08 Urban Runner with 63K original XREAS system. No leaks, rear bounces, the right front shock grumbles when it is compressed "more than normal driving". Not worried about the right front. Hope to rip it all out and replace it with Bilstein 5100?

For several years I ran the SS 1.2 setup and the ride was AMAZING. It felt to me like a 4x4 Lexus and I have driven many luxury cars when I was a valet in college.

Then I added an ARB bumper and Bud Built skid plate so I had to go up 1 notch on my adjustable Bilstiens. The ride is now quite stiff in the front; other than that it is pretty good but not as nice as before.

Hey Brian, Im bringing up a really old post here, but was hoping you could give me some info on your lift. I'm still on a quest for the "perfect" suspension setup, and I like the way you describe this one. Can't beat a lexus ride quality.

So, I looked at the 1.2 setup on Sonoran's website and didn't see it stated - is this front lift the Tundra TRD coil/bilstein 5100, or the Taco? And what perch did you have your set on when the ride was at its best at stock weight? I'm currently running Taco 5100s with 99 OEM coils on the middle of the three settings, and the ride is quite stiff for my liking. You think swapping to the Taco TRD coils would make a significant difference?

SS 1.2 uses the TRD's up front on the lowest settings for best ride. Gets stiffer as you go up. When adding weight you may have to move up and it gets stiff.

Because of this I went with ome 881's up front with ome shocks. Stiff ride, but once I added the bumper and winch its nice and soft like a stock ride. The rear 7 wraps handle great. You cant even tell its lifted truck, rides like stock pretty much until I turn. With no front sway bar, stock panhard thats expected though.

Is that the Tundra or Tacoma TRD setup?
 
Mine takes the bumps extremely well but is quite mushy.

Im running Tundra bilstein 5100's on the 3rd perch with stock tundra coils in the front and LC 7.5 wraps and OEM land cruiser shocks in the rear. I have no front sway bar but have a rear swaybar with extended links.

I attribute both the comfortable ride and the mushy handling to the lack of front sway bar. It's a trade off for sure, but I prefer to run without it. Offroad, it's a night and day difference and the front wheels remain in contact with the terrain so much better.

I think a very important point for the front suspension is to ensure that you are getting a decent amount of down travel. When I had less weight up front, my front suspension would top out very harshly on some speed bumps. This is where the suspension extends all of the way very quickly and "hits" the end of the travel. I took some measurements and found I was getting 7" of up travel and only 1.75" of down travel from my static ride height. I now have heavy skid plates and a winch and the ride is much better. The front end sits lower and Im now getting closer to 2.25" of down travel, which has made all of the difference. Even the performance on rough steep climbs is way better. The tires follow the terrain rather than bouncing.

Unless we're talking LT or some other expensive IFS setup, a lift more than 2.5" begins to severely decrease the on and off road performance of the front suspension in my opinion.
 
My Tundra Bilstein 5100's and 600lb Eibach's are great! More comfortable and soaks up bumps without the harshness or jitters.

The only thing is more body roll - I may add some bigger anti-roll bars.
 
I bought my 2000 4Runner with 55,000 miles on it and can honestly say the stock ride wasn't great. The rear axle was only about 1" off the rear bumpstops, so it bottomed frequently.

I've been running the Tundra front, OME 890 setup in the rear for 9 years now and it has worked really well. The rear is perfect. On the pavement the front end occasionally feels just a tad stiff, but I wouldn't want it any softer because on fast-moving stuff like Pismo and the desert I can bottom the front. If I didn't have this suspension, I would also be happy with the '99 coil setup because it rides nice too.
 
Keeping this alive. Id put mine at #3. I just recently put on the eibachs and put 97 LC KYB rear shocks on and I think the ride is so ideal. Personally I like my truck to lean closer to being stiff, means it's it's more controlled which I like. Couldn't ask much more out of a 16 year old vehicle

don't worry man, im in the same boat as you. im pushing 215k and its still stock as a rock everything from the factory. but im getting a brand new complete lift and tires at the end of the month so hopefully I will stop peeing blood for two days after I take this thing to the mountains!
 
When I.picked my 4th gen T4R earlier, the valet guy at Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, said my 4Runner rides really nice for just driving through the parking lot. He was impressed considering all the fancy MBZs, BMWs and other high end rides going through the valet. I was all smile!

I had to concur. In spite of my spacers and suspension lift with 5100s, my T4R drives like a dream: surprisingly smooth and comfortable.
 
I'm not 100% positive on what my ride setup is. The previous owner is the one that had it installed.

I know I have a front diff drop. Tokico Trekmaster shocks all around. OME springs in teh rear (not sure which ones exactly) and I believe the front coils are the stock one with spacers. Again, not 100%.

I have 1" or 1.25" wheel spacers (not sure of brand) and the Front and rear sway bars have been removed also.

Everything else is stock..no armor and no spare tire.

My impression on the ride quality is that it's kind of stiff and bouncy and somewhat scary when going over 65MPH. I get noticeable "hop" when hitting a bump during a turn at high speed. I also have a shimmey/shake in the steering wheel at high speed, but I attribute that mostly to the Dynabeads balancing system in the tires. The tires are retreaded BFG M/T KMs.

Although, I did notice that the shake/shimmey is way less pronounce after I pumped some grease into my OTRE's.

The ride quality does not pass "The Wife Test", lol. She has no desire to drive my rig. Haha.
