How does you 4Runner ride?

Stiff and strong.

The shocks have great response, so they are always ready for the next bump no matter how fast. I always have a 100% sense of the road, but not in a jarring way.

It is a little rough in parking lots or downtown, when I'm going slow in a non-performance manner, but that's just a truck. Kind of funny how much it tosses us around turning out of a driveway with a speed bump because of the solid rear axle.
 
I just posted our efforts on another thread on my son's 99 suspension, but I'll share here.

Near an 8. Original suspension at 189K was like a bouncy, out of control mushy ride.

Components:
Front - Moog 81088 coils, Pro-Comp ES9000 gas struts
Rear - OME 906 coils, Bilstein HD shocks

Handles nicely with control now. No more hitting the bump stops going thru the parking lot or at 45mph on dips in the road.

The front SAW 2.0's ride pretty good now. They use to be harsh, but i discovered they have relatively little down travel compared to OME's ect. so i used a top out spacer on top to lower the full extension point and cranked the coils off a little. I Only have about 2.5 inches of lift up front . the top outs put the extended point almost 1" further down. Just to where the cv joint boots rub the lca's. and i found that i still hit the bump stops before the coils bottom out. The front is honestly great now. the arb, winch with synthetic line, 2 batteries and full skids help to make the 650 lb coils softer.

I had my uca bushings die. I got a used uca for $15 and fixed that and eliminated a bad clunk from the front end. I knew what it was but i didnt change it out for about 6 months. When i puled it off the inner sleeves fell out of the bushings.... After that fix the front feels pretty solid

The rear is stiff. 891's with 2 trim packers per side and the stock rubber cones. I have all the spacers to keep the coils from falling out when flexing. I had a little issue with that. and with all the junk i carry (stack of cv's, full size spare, rear bumper, co2 tank, tools ect) It is pretty smooth. The lc shocks in the back are fine.

How did you know your uca bushing were bad? I wonder if that is part of the cause of my front end jitters
 
I would say mine is an 8 now. I bought my 02 4x4 Limited with 181140. I would guess it rode smooth for an all original suspension. It seemed to start bouncing a bit more and then at 184K, I noticed the rear starting to sag. So, I just replaced with what is in the sig below. Now the vehicle sits at 36” all the way around without any rake. I don’t know if not having any rank is good or bad thing. The vehicle is now more solid and I enjoy the ride now.
 
definitely an 8. toytec ultimate with the heavy springs up front for the bumper/gear and the 5150's and heavy springs out back. rides like a benz on the highway and with the exception on the factory bumpstops, rides great off road
 
2001 4Runner - 75000 miles - Original Owner

Hi all! New to the forum. I am the proud ORIGINAL owner of my 2001 4Runner.

Looking to get advice on my ride. It seems like everyone loves their 4runner like I do. Mine rides like a schoolbus on bumps and turns. I love the ride when I'm alone but I hate the BOUNCE with others in the vehicle. I would really like a smoother, bounce elimination ride.

I tried looking at other posts for a resolution but it's hard to get through it.

Any suggestions??

its your shocks buddy get some new shocks and your ride would be smooth as a baby's behind

If were talking OEM stuff than yeah, my OEM springs were soft, my Old Man Emu springs are stiff, the conflicting view was that of someone who has the same springs as i do.

To answer your question, grab a set of Rancho RS5000's, i get my set from sears online for $79 shipped 2 years ago, i know advance auto sells um for a but more, but they have free shipping and if you look hard enough you can get them for cheap with some coupon codes.

Well I guess since I started this thread and I now have aftermarket coils and shocks, I should participate in my own survey. Im running Performance Products coils with KYB gas shocks. Everything else stock.

I would call my ride a combination of 3 and 6. Its definately stiff, which is fine. And its not as bad as it was before, but still has a case of the "jitters" to a lesser degree. I have a hypothesis that my goodyear wrangler rts' may be contributing to this

Was looking at this exact setup for our 97 runner. Needs to be a daily driver as well as a guide vehicle. So the ride needs to be comfortable not harsh!! How many miles you have on your setup now? Still like it and how is the ride height holding up?

The rear rides too stiff for my liking with the OME 890's and OME shocks. I know that this lift is off-road tuned, but I might try swapping rear shocks in the future. The front rides very nice though with the Toytec coilovers.

lc shocks and lc coils rides nice and cheap too
