How Fast is it Safe To Go in My 4Runner?

Okay well thanks for all the responses. Ya, deer, and surprises would be major issues normally, but not here. It is extreme eastern Colorado. No trees at all. No hills, no nothing. You can see everything for hundreds of miles. If there were anything to the side of the road that could be blocking my view of something such as hills or trees, obviously I would not have driven so fast. But conditions are pretty okay where I was - I didn't even see another car the entire time I was on it.

That is just crazy and irresponsible to go at that speed. May end up killing someone. not worth it.

So I do a lot of driving on very very rural roads. I am often above 90 miles per hour, and 100 to 110 are often reached. I am afraid to keep it above 100 for long though, as I am afraid either my tires will burst or something will fail. I think the absolute fastest I've had it is about 118mph or so, but it will go faster though I am afraid. I have Geolander a/t-s tires. I have a 2006 4runner limited. No lift kit or anything. Can I just keep it over 100? Can I push past the 120 mark? Or should I be worried? Thanks a bunch!

This is a pretty dumb question, can't tell if you're trolling or serious.

If you blow a tire at that speed or an animal jumps out in front of you, you're going to be in trouble.

my 2 cents..the 4ruuner isnt built for speed...maxy spped should be 90mph...have done 110mph ..but just for a few secs...i think i read somewhere on this forum that a 4runner doing 60mph needs 30meters to come to a stop when the brakes are fully/safely depressed.......so go figure the stopping distance at 110mph

Bingo! I thought this was common sense, that a 4runner is not made for speed and dangerous to go at high speeds. emergency maneuvers are not safe with this type of vehicle. If you need to do a sudden turn to avoid something, you are going to flip. or if you need to stop suddenly you will have an issue as well.

One time i was driving the speed limit (maybe a bit faster) on the street and had to hit the brakes hard to avoid a dog. the 4runner bounced up and down a few times - oscillating a few times.

So the gist I get is unsafe! Just so everyone knows, I am not talking about driving like this from A to B. I follow speed limits. I am just talking about short 10 second or so bursts. I storm chase in eastern Colorado, and sometimes, in order to avoid large hail or a tornado, we need to blast roughly 300 yards in a direction. And that is the only time I have driven that fast and is why I am wondering. If conditions were unsafe or if there were anyone else in the road obviously I wouldn't drive fast. But I was just wondering.

Your tires will probably be fine. That being said, it's probably not good for your engine. Go as fast as you feel comfortable going, AS LONG AS THERE IS NOBODY ELSE AROUND FOR YOU TO HURT. Just remember that you are probably ****ED if an emergency situation arises. I've done about 110mph on an open section of highway and will never do it again. Stupid. ****ing. Idea. Unless you have a deathwish.

If, you are that concerned about hail damage to your vehicle, may be its time to get a vehicle that you're not worried about hail damage, just a thought.

Not trying to stir anything up... but honestly if you have to do an emergency swerve and/or hit an animal going 75~80mph (average speed for traffic in my area) you're gonna be just as porked as if you hit it going 90~100mph... then again driving like a blind grandma at 65mph is likely to get you run off the road anyways, so its a catch 22.

But yeah, just figured I'd mention that...

Well, it is safe to say that I wont be going so fast on roads again - even if avoiding severe weather.

I should have mentioned earlier that part of the reason I am asking is that I am going to a track (I know someone who works there) and they said I could run my runner down the straight and so this is part of the reason I am asking. I know 4Runners aren't built for speed, but that is too fun an opportunity to pass up!

well...just thought I would put this out there. Just saw on the news that a family of four wrecked on the highway from a tire blow-out. They said speed was a factor. I imagine it was probably loaded up for a vacation as well, and I also bet they exceeded the speed rating of the tires because it wasn't hot enough for a blowout. 2 in critical, 2 in stable.

Yeah, blowout is a catchall phrase, but often the air loss is precipitated by a tread/belt separation.

Speed was probably only a factor in the sense of their injuries and severity of the wreck, more than likely the owners of the vehicle were incompetent and did not check their tire pressure. Remember the Ford 'sploders with the Firestones? Not trying to be callous, but I see so many idiots who shouldn't be near machinery more complicated than a door handle at work; people like that are the reason we have TPMS and they STILL can't understand how to properly inflate their tires...

Something to consider... the clip on wheel weights are only guaranteed to 95 mph and tend to let loose around 100mph.

Some of the dirt roads around here don't have speed limits. The "forest roads" have speed limits under 35mph, even if not posted, but roads that are private or not maintained by the state are wide open. My county doesn't have any local speed laws to regulate speed where it isn't clearly posted. So if OP's area is similar he technically "can" go 90+ without breaking the law, but that doesn't mean he should do it and call it safe.

I've hit 114mph when I was 16 in my truck.

Now the absolute max I'll go on my street tires is 90. It's just not worth it, especially when you factor in body roll, SUV handling, etc. its just not smart what so ever. If you wanna go fast, you bought the wrong vehicle (unless you talk to [MENTION=26817]SkylineGTRracer[/MENTION])

Now doing a 1/4 mile on a closed track is different. Have some safe fun
