Around town I typically cruise at a constant 40 MPH. On the highway I'll be in the low 70s (55MPH speed limit). On the turnpike, closer to 90MPH. I did once get the 3rd gen up to 110MPH and it's surprisingly smooth.

I was hoping someone would say there top speed before the limiter hit. I got up to 95mph once out in the middle of nowhere in Central Oregon. Anything over 90 and this thing feels like a boat that can flip over.

Oh I can tell you that! For an auto it's 107 MPH before you hit the speed govenor. I've only done it a few times since being in a tall SUV going that fast is very unnerving.

85-90 on the autobahn in my stock 02 4r, have hit the governor at around 110 on a few occasions, try not to but its always tempting. Surprisingly smooth for size and as old as it is, then again german highways are very well built and maintained.

Was driving down the 215 I was going about 75 MPH a couple of Gen 3's passed me doing about 80 +. I was just wondering how fast you drive your 4Runner.:flamethrwoer2:

one of them wasn't a dark grey one was it? There is a distinct possibility it was me depending on the time. I have a tendency to lead foot a bit. At least until I get out of Southern CA on a road trip. Theres some mystery barrier that instantly relaxes me when I cross it.

On long road trips I've gotten the best MPG going 85 with cruise control.

I do a lot of highway. On a nice stretch between 75-80 cruising average, 3K on tach. Cops won't generally stop you for +10 in these parts. When I'm solo I try to stay around 75 or below, in a pack maybe tops 80-85. I try to stay in back or middle with decent spacing, you never want to be the rabbit out front. Most I took it to I think is low 90s.
Not a fan of these people that slow block the fast lane oblivious to all the aggravated people behind them. That'll cause accidents as the flow pattern is disrupted. And what about all these jacktards driving at night with their lights off.

I try keeping it below 3000 RPM and stay on the slower lanes; usually depart early to my destination (add like 30 minutes to whatever ETA navigation or google maps says) so I'm in no rush. I've topped it out at maybe 90 to do an "Italian tune up" :biggrin2:

Fun fun fun on the autobahn! I was just listening to Kraftwerk last week in my 4runner heading up to the mountain to go skiing.

In the city it’s usually way below the speed limit because of all the bloody gridlock traffic. However, out on the open Texas Highway I’ll set the cruise control to 80mph. Sure, I’ll burn a little oil. But I’ve never had an issue.

My 2001 T4R highway mileage goes up to 23 or 24 MPG if I keep it to about 65 MPH. This has been confirmed on several long road trips. (Cleaning the MAF may have helped too, but wind resistance/drag is exponential at higher speeds, not linear.)

Ah, that wouldn't have been me that day. Although I'm out there a lot on service calls the only part of the 215 I hit that day was between the 10 and 60.

Interesting. The speed limiter on most Japanese vehicles is 112mph/180kph as that is the required limiter on vehicles on public roads in Japan.

I'm in no hurry.

Out in here in Aus i'll cruise at 100kph/62MPH on the freeway but it will comfortably rock along at 130kph / 80-85MPH if needs be. Ive got a handful of a MK2/89 Golf GTi (details in sig) to go fast. The 4R is to roll around in and take off-road tbh. They're not designed to be rocketships!

Well if it was a Black '02 then it was most probably me. Most days I set my cruise to 65 buy other days my lead foot wants to take over. Even if I am cruising at 80 people pass me like crazy
