I find above 5mph but the slower the better (as a rule) is the answer for the best transition 2hi to 4hi.

The official answer is 62mph IIRC. The "real" number is below 100kmh (62.5mph). Remember the T4R is based on a vehicle that sells more in the rest of the world than the US. Most of it's design limits are expressed in Kg's and KM/H's and then converted...

Probably in areas that don't have much snow, but more dirt instead. Thus the rust issues.
 
85 mph in 4WD without any problems for me last winter. Isn't it only recomended to SHIFT into 4WD under 55, but no limit for driving speed? Thats the way I read into user manual.
 
Sorry for the confusion but my question was: If you select 2WD, is it the front wheels moving your vehicle (FWD) or is it your rear wheels moving your vehicle (RWD)?

Not true. 4Runners, Pathfinders, Blazers, etc, all the truck-based SUV's with part-time 4WD systems are RWD based with a transfer case that sends power to the front wheels when you choose (or all the time, as in our full time 4AWD V8 4Runners).

It's my understanding that the V6 (part-time) and V8 (full-time) trucks use the same transfer case. So the speed limit is only for the actual switching from one to the other.
