How important is the foil/fiberglass insulation behind the front o2 sensor?

Mine was falling apart so I tore it off because I didnt want to breath the dust when changing the o2. Wondering if I should look for material to replace it with.

Is the material for heat or for sound?

The front 02 sensor is and air/fuel sensor. Looks like and o2 sensor but it's not. The foil insulation is a heat shield for the front cat converter. Kinda important as a converter can get over 750 degrees. It will keep your passenger feet nice and toasty though

I think it is only air/fuel on california models. My 99 has an o2 in the front and the same one behind the cat.

You're right, it is on CA emissions which I have. Fed only has one cat. I assumed you had 2 cats since you were talking about that insulation right where the firewall curves into the floorboard. Maybe a picture of the bottom.

It's was a foil thing that went between the firewall and heat shield of the cat, but was mostly disintegrated already. It was held to the stud in the pic. The foot well feels hot but not weathertech melting hot. Guess I should replace it.

I'm going through this replacement right now and you should make sure if it's a Cali or Fed model. The sensors are different, I do believe. I found out which mine was by looking at the label under the hood. And yeah...I'd replace that foil :-D

It's pretty simple. In '99 and 2000, there were one cat Fed systems with two O2 sensors and two cat Cali. systems with an A/F sensor in front and an O2 in back. In '01 and '02, there were only the two-cat systems with the A/F in front in all 50 states. Prior to '99, there were only the one cat systems with two O2s, in all 50 states.

Anything else you read is wrong or you misunderstood.

In '99 and '00, the Cali. two-cat systems were sold all over the country (especially the Northeast) as states adopted the Cali. standard. My '99 NJ rig is a Cali.

What part did you end up replacing it with? Mine has gone to shit and i'm afraid it's doing more harm then good right now (it tore and is fraying). Definitely need to replace it, but not sure with what.
