How long do Cross Terrians last

The neat thing about being a member for so long is that you can report things that happens over a long period of time.

I had to replace my Michelin Cross Terrains about two weeks ago. They lasted 55,000 miles. That seems to be about right with what I read from other write ups from other tire forums. Customers from Discount Tire forum seem to say 60,000 miles, so I guess I was pretty close.

I replaced them with Michelin LTX. They were a bit cheaper and I am hoping for a slightly longer treadwear. I just got back from a vacation and I can say the LTX's were slightly louder, especially at 80 MPH. They seem to handle fine, but I would give the edge to Cross Terrians.

Well, i was hoping that you could get more out of the Cross Terrains than 55K miles. I am planning on getting this tire for my wife's Highlander. I thought that it would last 80K miles or so, but i guess not. I will probably still end up getting it since it's gotten such good reviews from almost everyone for it's quiet comfy ride and good rain traction.
 
I finally replaced mine at 120k, no kidding. I don't know if it matters, but I rotate every 7,500.

Oh, they were not bald. Three of the four had just gotten down to the replacement level so I knew it was time.

I've got 30k on the new set, and you can't even tell it.
 
When I bought the Cross Terrians some tire dealers did not recommend them, saying they lasted only 30,000 miles. I have also heard some good reports, the post for 120,000 miles is the most I have heard.

I was hoping for a bit more than 55,000 miles but from what I have read that seems to be about right. I rotated them every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.

Here is a link to some customer reviews about Cross Terrians. It seems some people get less than me and some get 80,000 or more, but most people get about 60,000 miles. I think they were good tires for my rig.

I've been told that tire tread wear is dependent upon proper tire balancing and always rotating the tires after a certain mileage (I think 6,500?). Of course, where/how/when(weather) I'm sure has an affect as well. All in all, I'd say its very complicated, but they are variables that are for the most part under your control.

If I'm wrong, please let me/us know!
 
i just checked the tread depth of my xterrains at 30k miles and they had about 8-9mm left. i didnt rotate for 15k miles so the rear set had worn 1mm more than the front. i keep them at 40psi and drive like a grandma so they'll definitely last past 60k miles.

I took them off at 60,000 miles and could have easily gotten another 20,000 out of them, but since I am so anal about tires, I figured I had gotten enough life out of them.

I have to disagree about the good rain traction. I found the Cross Terrains to hydroplane too easily. Quiet comfy ride, sure, they were very good in those departments, but wet traction was lacking.

Of course, I bought into the hype with the Fortera Silent Armors and they aren't any better in the rain, in fact they are worse. Next I will get either Maxxis Bravo HT 760 or Continental CrossContact LX.
 
Well, I seem to be getting the short end of the stick, with only 55,000 miles and EVERYONE is doing better.

Then to top it off my new LTX's had a problem, one of them was losing air. So I went back to Discount Tire and they said, I have a nail in it and it is on the edge, so I have to buy a new tire. The salesman then asked, "Did I get the warranty". I smiled and said "yes". Finally some good luck.

I thought back to getting these new tires and the original salesman said the warranty is $16 per tire, do I want them? I said no, then he said, how about $10 a tire and I said yes. They did charge me for a new warranty on the new tire, but overall I felt lucky. Hopefully, I will get better mileage on these tires.
 
Ok...this makes me feel better about my future purchase. I think that my wife's Highlander tires will need replacing in another 5000 miles or so. Michelin CTs...can't wait!

So that gives you 5K miles to plan some other things... like a lift to fit those upsized tires perhaps, then the sliders, and don't forget the skids. I'm assuming it's got to be a 4wd or you would have made her trade it long ago! C'mon, you know ya whana :biggrin2:

I got LTX M/S. On the bill in said Michelin LTX M/S SL ORWL, price $106. Sorry, no LTX A/T2. Being a 2WD, it usually sees gravel or at the worst dirt roads.

I got billed $16 for warranty for new tire and $1 on Environmental Fee, so a total of $17.06, I guess they taxed the Environmental Fee. Go figure.

My Wife does not even know that they are not Cross Terrians. As long as it runs fine and she can put it in "D", she is happy. I feel lucky since I didn't have to buy another tire.

Trust me, i really want to try those Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor, but my wife is NOT happy with having all-terrains on her mall-crawling vehicle! She likes the comfy quiet ride. She thinks that my off-roading trips border on insanity.

We may even trade in her Highlander for a M-I-N-I-V-A-N in the near future!:p (Hopefully, it won't be my G that gets traded in!)

So are the Michelin CT tires mainly for off-roading type stuff? I was thinking of getting a set of these tires this weekend but I rarely do any driving on anything other than highway. Probably 4/5 times a year I drive up to the mountains for the snow and maybe drive on sand for 2 weekends out of the year for camping.

Should I be getting these tires?

No, basically for on road driving. They are considered a bit of a break through in technology when they came out. Tires that fit a SUV, but have the road maners of a car tire. Great handling when driving on the road and very quiet. The LTX that I replaced the CT's for are a little bit more for off road, but they are still decent tires for the road.

If you drive mainly on the road, the Cross Terrians are great. They are more expensive that the LTX's. So be prepared for a bit of extra $ when you get one.
