WOW , Thai's getting a minivan..............


My tire's go away between 40 and 50k not matter what. The subject at hand about how do I know when to change them , means your already thinking they are questionably safe ....... that should tell you something.


I've NEVER put any stock in tire milage stats given by ( it would be stupic , but I could do it ) mfg. I could run my Revos until the belts are flappin and there is 80k on them . Then mfg's also have not way of taking into account how people monitor their tire pressure , driving habits , rotate schedule ect........

Well, we just put on Michelin CT's. The Highlander rides a little quieter and a bit more comfy...the stock tires were not bad in either of these things, but did not last very long (30K miles). What is interesting is that different sizes of the CT's have different treadwear ratings!!

For example, the Highlander stock size is 225/70/16...it's treadwear rating is 720. Discount Tire Co. did not have this size in stock, so we went with 235/70/16...and it's treadwear is ONLY 420!! I needed the tires right away because the original tires were wearing badly (partly our fault because alignment may be off from accident a while back).

Anyway, this may explain Peter's issue with CTs shorter-than-expected life?? Peter, what was the size of the CTs??

As for minivan, we will get one in a year or two or whenever the Highlander gives us problems.

My tire size is 225/75R15. Here is a quote from me in my tire buying thread.

Boy, Costco sure is a mad house. The sale rep said to get the X radial instead of the LTX, better traction in the rain. I looked at the treadwear of the tires and it was 440 for the X Radial, 500 for the LTX and 700 for the Cross Terrians. I decided to get the Cross Terrains.

So sorry to bust your bubble, my rating was 700, but hey look at it this way. With a rating of 700 and it lasted less than the LTX tires, maybe your rating of 420 will out last mine.

I'm just about to replace the ones on my '03 Limited after 107K miles. The rears have 2/32" and the front have a tad more with 3/32".

Majority of my driving is highway (95/5). I've been waiting for these things to die forever... LOL

I had both LTX's and Cross Terrains on my Explorers and liked them both. Liked the LTX's a bit more for no particular reason other than the CT's were bad about picking up gravel in my driveway every morning and re-distributing it into my wheel wells for the first 3-4 miles. I've got about 42K on the Dunlops and will probably go with the CT's as the LTX does not come in the OEM size. I haven't found the Dunlops to be as bad as everyone predicted although I think they are beginning to flat spot overnight, since I just moved and have not yet been able to get into the garage.
