How long do you run a battery before replacing it?

I have this thing about letting a battery run past four years, i just don't want to be out some where and find i have a dead battery.

And as i found out with the OEM battery, when the voltage was a little low it still would spin the starter, but the system computer would not allow the fuel pump to work.

I got a new battery and it started right up.

I call AAA (so cal auto club) -AAA will come to my house and replace my battery for about 100 bucks (they use Interstate batteries -which I have always had good luck with) and the battery has a 3-year free replacement then pro-rated warranty. People always talk about how the original Panasonic battery that came with our Runners was so great, and I don't disagree, but peace of mind to me means every 4 years no matter what. I've never been let down by a battery in almost 3 decades of driving.

Original Panasonic lasted 10 years. I hope the replacement Northstar AGM lasts just as long. No reason that it won't in mild NorCal environment. A good battery test will tell you how much life is left in it.

I drive into Oklahoma to visit friends, you can't break down after dark on their streets or highways without fear of being robbed it happens a lot in and around Tulsa.

Also in Oklahoma you can take any Auto or Truck that is 10 years old or older, and sell it to a salvage, no title required just sign a name no I.D. required or is asked for.

Many break down run out of gas or have a dead battery, they call a friend for a ride or a wrecker and leave and later return to find their ride in gone.
It's happens a lot there are people driving around night and day looking for a quick grab and quick cash at a salvage.

My 2008 had the original panosonic up until 3 weeks ago. Never had one problem, would leave my hatch open with interior lights on for over an hour at a time and would start rite up. Decided to replace with an interstate just to be safe, since 8 years is getting up there

I don't have concrete experience or answers but on some bass boating forums, some have expressed concerns on using lithium during cold weather/winter conditions. As for the cost, I would just go AGM.

I have a similar one that I carry on trips. It was probably a couple years ago they closed out an old model (maybe a different mfg) and sold off old stock for $70.00. It's come in handy. Last time I used it was in the San Juan mountains in a downpour at night and a guy was stranded with a dead battery as the occassional truck drove past him. We stopped, grabbed ours, an umbrella and had him on the road on 2 minutes and even stayed dry. He was one happy guy!

That's pretty much what I do. When a vehicle barely cranks over, for no apparently reason, I always think that I should immediately replace the battery. But I end up driving somewhere, and using my jumper cables.

Battery life is highly subjective to climate, and easy enough it will start to show signs of declining life with corrosion, leaking etc.

Its just an easy piece of mind type deal, why not make the change especially if you live in the extreme parts of our country.

So for booster/chargers what Amp rating you guys figure it takes to crank the V8?

I'm not supposed to but forgot my keys in the car while repairing it and it fully discharged it. then I thought the battery will not be good anymore so I replaced it and kept the old one and recharged it. I'm glad I saved it and I was able to use it for camping. It is now my backup battery that I carry for multiple purpose. Cheers!

Hauling around that extra weight with one, and having to pay a core fee for not turning one in when buying a new battery, just is not IMHO a wise idea.
Also after seven years how long will it really be a battery one can depend on?

lots of places do not have a core charge. as to hauling the weight, if its on the tongue of a camper, where the battery is supposed to go, its not any EXTRA weight..


my original Panasonic went 10 years.
so, potentially quite a bit longer...

Years ago i did keep old batteries but seldom ever used them,then i was stuck with getting rid of them.

I don't find the cost every four years for a new battery a problem, i do find the fear about the wife and me, getting stuck out some place with a dead battery, and having to use deadly force to keep from getting robbed or killed.

I live in a dangerous city where it's kill or get killed, giving some one a chance is not something i do if i can help it.:flamethrwoer2:
