That is pretty much correct until the Highlander came along. (Now there can be a debate IF the Highlander is a SUV.) Some months other SUV's might beat the 4Runnner, but it is pretty much a good seller with the Highlander usually topping the charts.Koz said:

Some other SUV's like the Ford Explorer, they sell 4 or 5 times as much as the 4Runner. So if you want to be like everyone else get a Explorer or a Trailblazer.

That is a good chart to see how 4Runners are doing. As usual Highlander is doing a little better, but the RAV4 is better better than all other SUV's. The RAV4 is a new model, 2006 and the Highlander is on it's last year of production. A new Highlander is coming out in 2008.GatorGreg said:
I would expect the 4Runner sales to drop a little more next year too as it would be near the end of it's life cycle. I would say 2009 or 2010 we will get a new 4Runner.

The Ford Exploder is the most successful SUV and you can tell by how many there are on the roads. :cursin:
4Runners seem to be more regional with high concentrations of sales. Obviously we have a lot of them of all gens in Colorado but when I was out in DC I was hard pressed just to see a handful a day. Here around Denver I more than occasionally see all gen represented at an inersection at red lights.
Even when I was down in Tampa this last month they weren't that frequent but them Explorers are all over the place.
Here's the 4Runner history link which has sales year by year of the 3rd and 4th gens. '97 appears to be the big year with 128,496 Runners sold.

4th gens hit a high of 114k in '04 but have cooled down to 103k this last year partly in due to fuel prices and the introduction of the new FJ took some sales away.
'97-'00 were the years that had the highest sales.

In 2001 the Highlander came along and I suspect it stole a little of the 4Runner sales. In 2001 the price dropped a good bit on the 4Runner right after the Highlander came out. I would think in 2008 the 4Runner will take another hit when the new larger Highlander comes out. If I was thinking of getting a NEW 4Runner, I would wait for the new Highlander to come out and hopefully get a better price.
Also notice the sales of the Sequoia are in the toilet. 2,568

You can't count it if it wasn't called a 4Runner prior. That's like including 4Runner sales with Sequoias. Explorers are still the top selling SUVs right now and have been since they came out in '90.

I'm sure the Highlander took some of the 4R sales with the gas prices rising over the last few years , the FJ maybe took a few of the hard core people who wanted a different look.
The Highlander is a car with a suv body . Many like that if they don't do any heavy work / off road or just want a carlike ride.

Maybe global total but the US figures are still dominated by the Explorer and those are the ugly POSs I have to see alot of. Toyota didn't sell any type of 4Runner in the US til '84.
Koz, where are you getting the 9.1M figure from? I thought it was common knowledge that the first 4Runner came out in 1984 as an early '85 or '84 1/2 (same debate as with the Mustang sort ofKoz said:
). Yes it was based on the Toyota pickup / Hilux, but I've never heard anyone else ever suggest that pre '84 sales of Toyota pickups should count towards total 4Runner sales. If you're gonna count pre '84 Toyota pickups as 4Runners, should you not also count pre '90 Ford Ranger pickups as Explorers?
