Toyota has listed and considers them as the same vehicle. Other then in the US it is called Hilux. Back in 84 the next gen Hilux was updated with basically a cap and was still sold as a Hilux. They also introduced the same vehicle to the US as the 4Runner. To this day the 4Runner is still called Hilux. The Tacoma is not the Hilux and never was.

I think you are confusing the Hilux with the Hilux Surf. The pickup was called the Hilux overseas. When they stuck the hardshell cab on the back in '84 to create an SUV they called it the Hilux Surf overseas and the 4Runner in USA. The pickup is still called the Hilux overseas. The SUV is called the Hilux Surf / 4Runner.

Yes,the PU in Europe and Japan are called Hilux. IMO there wasn't any 4Runners til '84,you're stretching a bit to support the argument.

I guess the Explorer is the #1 in sales in the US since 4Runenr total here doesn't come close to 5.5 mil and I'm kinda glad.

Based on the linked PDF, Toyota seems to be grouping the old hilux pickup truck from 1968-69 and all its offshoots -- Hilux surf/4Runner, Hilux/Tacoma.

The original question, thankfully, simplifies the issue to US Market. Anyone have the cumulative number for 4runner badged vehicles sold?

It seems most years in the '90s they held an average of 100,000 a year. I'm guessing somewhere just under 3 mil.

4Runners are everywhere here in San Diego.

The Ford Exploder is the most successful SUV and you can tell by how many there are on the roads. :cursin:

4Runners seem to be more regional with high concentrations of sales. Obviously we have a lot of them of all gens in Colorado but when I was out in DC I was hard pressed just to see a handful a day. Here around Denver I more than occasionally see all gen represented at an inersection at red lights.
Even when I was down in Tampa this last month they weren't that frequent but them Explorers are all over the place.


Here's the 4Runner history link which has sales year by year of the 3rd and 4th gens. '97 appears to be the big year with 128,496 Runners sold.

4th gens hit a high of 114k in '04 but have cooled down to 103k this last year partly in due to fuel prices and the introduction of the new FJ took some sales away.
'97-'00 were the years that had the highest sales.

I bet it will still be truck based as they need to have a midsize suv that can tow and handle heavier payload and at least a little off road. The highlander is thier midsize suv for people who dont need an suv but just want one, the 4Runner is for people who need an suv. It may be lower though as that seems to be the trend, but what I fear the most is that it will be butt ugly like the new highlander, rav4, lx570 are. Im not even a huge fan of the styling of the new tundra or camry, but they arent too bad. Im sure the inside will be very nice though and it will have nice features.

and i remember in 98 and 99 when we were buying explorers they all had little cards on the windows that said the explorer is the number 1 selling suv for however many years. I guess that doesnt mean that it is the number one selling suv ever, but based on how many i see on the roads compared to anything else I would bet that it is.

4Runners have usually been the best seller, now it is number 3. Having sold over 9,000 4Runners last month it is still doing well. With the newly designed RAV4 and soon to be re-designed Highlander I see the 4Runner staying in third place. Also I am guessing the Sequoia will re-designed before the 4Runner. Still, there is still a need for the 4Runners size and I don't see that will change. It is still doing fairly well despite the gas prices. I would think it will still be the best seller full frame, real SUV for Toyota. I mean do we really think when the Highlander came out and took over in best the best seller that it is really like the 4Runner. The Highlander is a great station wagon or if you like a cross over SUV.

Bottom line Toyota does not want to lose either market.

The 4Runner was Toyota's best selling SUV until 2001 when the Highlander came out. It has pretty much stayed in second place, even though the Highlander and the 4Runner were both mid size. Right now the RAV4 is doing really well beating out the 7 year old designed Highlander.

As far as comparing the 4Runner to the Explorer, the 4Runner is not even in the same ball park. The Trailblazer also sells a lot more than the 4Runner.

According to auto mfg's the new crossovers are selling better than SUV's ever did.

The crossover is a great glorified station wagon , some have AWD , still look a little SUVish and a little mini-vanish all rolled into one. Also a big factor is milage they are getting.

Some of them are out in hybrid form ( dont get me started on what a scam that is) but some folks buy into it hook,line and sinker , more power to them.

Definetly in actual utility but both are the same from a soccer mom's point of view and in the real world nearly all 4Runners see the same use an Explorer does.
