How many have an external transmission cooler?

Anyone ever added a second cooler in addition to the stock V8 cooler? They're pretty inexpensive and we tow a ~3000# camper through the mountains. Transmission has nearly 140k miles on it and a little extra fluid never hurt when it comes to keeping things cool.

Plus, on the 2004 the PID for tranny temp doesn't read out of the OBD2sensor. Even with a scan gauge. So I can't tell what the temp is. Would be cool to rig up a temp sensor if my own at the cooler intake. Hmmm... Might have to look into that.

Are you sure about that? Because it worked for both the 3rd gen and the later 4th gen. I think you can get it to read the trans temp but it may be a different X-gauge code than was used later. I'd do some searching to see if you can find out if there is an X-gauge code for the V8. I don't know why there wouldn't be, it would seem odd to me that Toyota would not have the trans send the fluid temp on the 2004 models but would have it do so on later models. :shrug:
 
Toyota didn't start using the CANSF protocol until 2005. It was one of the ISO protocols up until then.

I've got a couple of apps that connect to a wifi OBD2 reader and none of them pick up the TFT either. I even emailed them and was told it won't work.

It's okay though. It looks like there are quite a few easy bolt on gauges that come with a sender. Bolting it into the incoming coolant lines on the current cooler should be easy enough. Just need to figure out a good way to get the sending wire from the engine compartent through to the passenger compartment. Preferably with no drilling. :)

Yeah, this is an old thread but I'd like to add something I ran across but don't recall where.

"I have since installed a mechanical gauge and it reads from 30 to 50 degrees cooler than the scan gauge, even reading right at the transmission output line. Long story short, I wouldn't trust the scan gauge."

I added a small secondary cooler to the stock one with the V8 to see if my SG registers any different temps.

I'm pretty sure we're given incorrect reading on the tranny temps.

Looks like when I do my next drain and fill, will have to use the dash gauge method for temp ready to check and compare it to the scan gauge now.
 
It would explain why some of us have exceeded the temperature that the tranny light is supposed to go on and it didn't.
 
when i took my 4th gen into the dealer i asked the service tech what he thought about it, and he said it might have harder shifting... anyone know why it would happen????

I'd say he is full of crap and trying to sound authoritative. otherwise, why does the V8 have exactly such a thing from the factory?

Might ask him that, the blank look might be priceless.

I added one very recently and noticed, not a thing. Maybe takes the trans temp a bit longer to get warm, but that is it.

Are any 4th gens in warranty right now?

If your auto trans craps out with one on there, they'll probably blame it. If it's an issue with something else on your rig, no issue with it being there.
 
The last post on this I've seen is from 2011. I haven't seen anybody talking about this so I was wondering how many of you actually have done this mod? Is it really necessary?

I've done it, i tow often so its necessary, and when I'm not towing its just added insurance. under normal driving with the cooler my trans temp is about 150*F, today when i towed less than 10 miles and under 50 it was around 205*F. now imagine those numbers with nothing to cool the tranny
 
Has anyone retrofitted the OEM (for the V8) trans cooler system on a V6 model? I have a 2006.

I realize that there are many inexpensive aftermarket set ups available, but if it wasn't ridiculously expensive, I'd rather retrofit with all of the OEM parts in the system.

Also, if anyone could recommend a good aftermarket/custom shop to do the install in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area, I would appreciate—all my sources are for the car it's pulling :-)

I have a b&m trans cooler, with a autometer trans temp gauge. The sending unit is in the input to the aftermarket cooler. Basically in between the radiator output. I have a v6. B&M is the way to go. It's a super easy install! The gauge was too!

it probably hasn't been done simply because the aftermarket parts are so inexpensive and have a greater capacity often times. any independent shop should be able to do the install on your v6 in less than 2 hours
 
I have b&M cooler on my 2003 V6 4.0L and she runs the same no matter what off-road or on road and I live in the desert where 105* -110* degrees is average
I noticed a difference when my temps stopped fluctuating
