How many miles on your 4runner?

It keeps going and going and going.....

Hi, this is my first post. I bought a '97 4runner for my wife about 5 years ago (she kept seeing them on the road and asking, "What's that? I want one of those."-- I guess I'm just lucky!)

Anyway, it had 50,000 miles on it when I bought it and now it has over 176,000 miles. Haven't done a thing to it except preventive maintenance and oil changes. Oh, and a brake job.

Question is: how many miles on your 4runner? How many miles should I expect to get?

Have a 99 Lim. 198K.
The truck came with very receipt since day one. After buying it i did fluid changes and a new front left axle from dry rot on the rubber. No issue at all. Still pulls 19MPG Hwy. I call it a win. I guessing the way I take care of cars it will go 300+ . Time will tell. There are some guys one here that have 600+ I have read.

nothings better than hopping in your 4runner right after a nice timing/wp/belts servicing. i couldn't believe the difference in how everything was synced back up the same way as when I first got mine. but hey, i guess what else is the point of doing your timing belt? to sync it back up!

I agree 10,000% with this post. I did my TB/WP job about 4 days ago and before I did it, I had major belt whine and tinkering. I started the truck up after I did the job and added coolant and checked all the lines.. Whoo-ee-baby! That thing started up so quick and quiet. It has zero belt whine or any other noises besides a sexy 3.4 purring. Response is amazing and it feels great. Definitely worth my time. As well as a maintenance job checked off the list.

Is it really as no-brainer as they say? and where do I get the kit with everything in one package?

I believe with time and resources, anything can be done, anything.

With that said, TIME will require this truck not being your daily driver OR you having a weekend off, because I do recommend taking your time. This is a non-interference engine so you can only screw up so much. I highly recommend following this How-To/Pictorial: (So, yes, I do think you can do it.)

As far as RESOURCES, you have US!
Also, in terms of purchasing the right gear, go on eBay and find a good TB/WP kit. Let me give you a prime example:

THIS is a kit w/o the accessory belts:
Toyota V6 Trucks Timing Belt Water Pump Kit w Hydraulic Ten Genuine OEM Parts | eBay

THIS is a kit with the accessory belts:
Toyota Timing Belt Water Pump Kit Genuine Parts 4 Runner Truck 3 4L V6 | eBay


If your not going to install a new hydraulic tensioner, I strongly recommend this tool:
Schley (SCH97300) Toyota Timing Belt Tensioner Compressor - Amazon.com
Or, you can remove the old tensioner and put it in a vice and compress it and put a pin in to hold it back. Use a wobble socket to remove the bolts holding the hydraulic tensioner in. (Beats removing the AC Compressor!)

The only special tools I would recommend using would be a breaker bar, 1/4" wobble socket for hyd. ten.(OR, tensioner compressor tool), and a chain wrench/strap wrench. (Can't think of anything else at the moment.)

208,500+ miles on my 2000 SR5.

I bought it in May ('12) with 190,000 miles and it was the cleanest vehicle with 190,000 miles I have ever seen! Meticulously taken care of, minimal rust for a Ohio 4runner, and to my great pleasure I can average 21 MPG on the highway if I keep 'er around 70 MPH.

If only she were a 5spd...

Have already replaced warped rotors and pads, rear axle seals and soon will be replacing the timing belt and water pump just for precaution, wife is the outdoor user, I drive a corolla, Mustang is weekend warrior.

The '97 died at about 196k due to rollover, but was still running strong and most of it's parts will live on in another truck.

The '99 has 169k. Just a teenager in toyota years, lol.

She just turned 200k yesterday. This truck was very well taken care of and just had her third timing belt done about 30k miles ago. I'm looking to get another 100k at least out of it before I really worry much about anything.Not a drop of oil leaks either, wish my old Fords could have pulled that off, lol... :driving:
