Hi, this is my first post. I bought a '97 4runner for my wife about 5 years ago (she kept seeing them on the road and asking, "What's that? I want one of those."-- I guess I'm just lucky!)

Anyway, it had 50,000 miles on it when I bought it and now it has over 176,000 miles. Haven't done a thing to it except preventive maintenance and oil changes. Oh, and a brake job.

Question is: how many miles on your 4runner? How many miles should I expect to get?

I got 330K out of my 1999 Limited T4R, I just scrapped it. Motor still ran great, still looked good, transmission blew and the rust was beating on the under carriage, so had to go. I picked up another 1999 with a 5 speed needing work, its all straightened out now. These are about as reliable of a vehicle you can get. 300K is a walk in the park for these.

Right now I have 2. The 1995 has 198k and the 1996 has 186k. I am going to get rid of the 95. She has issues.

ive got 203,303 miles on my '99 but whats really impressive is my dads, '98 with 710k miles, not bad for a 3.4l (same engine). Ps- he owns a parts distribution business and has been running the 4runner hard since he drove it new off the lot. just shows what regular maintenance and a quality product do.

I also have a 97 Limited 4x4 that has 231,000 on it.

And I just recently purchased a 99 Limited 4x4 that has 220,000 on it.

3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen for a daily driver.

We are looking to buy a 4Runner to drive 3900 mile through Mexico to Belize and then use as a daily driver in the hills at a higher elevation in the Cayo district of Belize.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm interested in what year models are most reliable, which engines, and stock ground clearance, etc...

The roads are rough, especially in the rainy season, but we're not planning to go off road.

They take a lot of the older stuff from the US to Mexico and Central America... if future parts may be a concern. I forget what they are called, but they come over here, buy all the older Toyotas they can and send them south.

I would feel comfortable with a 3rd gen w/ the 3.4, just because it's what I know.

My 97 V6 manual trans 225,600 miles. Still going strong, getting new tires this week.
