Hi All

I'm looking at buying a 98 4Runner. Seller states the vehicle has been maintained well but what advice or things should I look at/for when I go check out the truck? Has 144k miles and pics look okay. It's a 98 so I just want it to run dependably. It's the 3.4 limited and has some interior snags but nothing out of the norm.

Any advice helps...thanks

I just bought mine, 1996 SR5 with 259k on it. Amazingly enough everything works on it except the trip meter.

Do some surfing in the third gen sticky section and you will find a buyer's guide that talks about some of the historical issues this generation has had. Overall these seem like solid rigs, just need to keep up with basic maintenance and you should be fine. 144k seems like pretty low miles for something almost 20 years old.

A 21 year old car is going to need a fair amount of maintenance. I would check the sellers service records, specifically
- timing belt
- lower ball joints
- radiator
- ignition system (plugs, wires, etc)
- fluids (trans, diffs, ps, Etc)

If you don't see those items having been serviced, then plan on doing them all in addition to regular maintenance like oil and filter, air filter and MAP sensor clean, brakes, tires, alignment, etc.

Very true! Well it technically had about 220,000 when I got it. Lol only issue I have with it now is my suspension sounding like a pigeon after installing icon coils and cam burg UCAs

This is a question I've wondered, as my 97 is over 150,000mi, with seemingly tons of life left.

Like you, routine maintenance has been just about all I've had to do, save for a rack & pinion unit that died last summer. I blame valet parking (I park in New York City every day in a valet garage)...those cats squeal around tight corners like Mario friggin' Andretti, and my heavy LT265/70R16 BFG All-Terrains worked the fluid hard until a seal finally blew.

I also replaced my shocks with Bilsteins, but that was preference, not part failure.

I'm hoping to get completely tired of the truck before I'd ever "need" to replace it, and I'd love to see about 2 dozen replies from 200,000mi + 4runner owners...

I had 230K on my 2001 SR5 when I traded it in and so sorry I did the rockers rusted out and I should of replaced them and kept it.. ran beautiful
