I was pretty sure that 2 years was off. I have done the VA for some things and it was pretty smooth. Going back soon again for service connected Injury Stuff. It is nice that it is there to help off set the cost. I personally think it should be free for the rest of my life anything related to Iraq or Afghanistan. They say it is but it is worse than pulling teeth.

For anyone still, Take this word of advice. Make copy's of everything you have I mean everything! All service records, Medical Records, Orders, Everything and keep it. I did and it was the only thing that saved me allot of headaches. It is a nice Ace of Spades when they try some BS after you get out!

This isn't related to any service connected claims. Any OIF/OEF vet qualifies for 5 years of complete VA coverage.

I have a question for all of you military folks. I'm a 23 year old kid with a love for my country and feel that calling for service every time I see our flag. I originally wanted to join the Marine Corps Reserve when I was 18 to pay for school and attend college, but backed out because the recruiter was a complete turd burglar :mad2: And because I really wanted to focus on getting my degree. Now I will be completing school soon and I've really thought about becoming an officer of the Marines. I've always had a love for aviation since I was little so I figured I wanted to earn my wings. I really, really had a passion for the CH-46 Phrogs for a very long time, but was disappointed to learn that they are phasing out these incredible helicopters. My question is this:

What is the commitment in terms of years for an aviation contract with the Marines? Also, is there a way you can be guaranteed an aviation contract?

On a side note, I have a girlfriend who I've been dating for several years now in a committed relationship. Would it be fair to her that I even consider something like this? I haven't mentioned it much, because I would honestly feel horrible asking her to support this decision. I've seen firsthand how hard it is for military families to be strong for their service men and women...

I'm not focused only on being a Pilot. I know there are lots of officer jobs, but I am quite sure this would be one I really, really liked. Plus having the honor to serve the US would be fulfilling a dream I've had all my life.

But on the other hand, I've got a great job at a large technology company that pays great for someone my age. Great girlfriend, great family...It wouldn't be easy to sort of leave all that behind.

I will try and do my best to answer this in the most truthful way I can and keep in mind this is only my opinion form my experiences over the last decade. Plus time in Iraq working the other side of the house with some other BA dudes.

As far as flying in the Marine Corps. I'm not really sure how many Aviation Units we have in the 4th Marine Division (Reserves), point is there is not allot. Now the active side of the house. There are opportunity's. I'm not sure if you can get it in writing and this is why. Let's say you get 3/4 the way through training and there is something you just can't pass (Ex, the spin and puke machine, it washes more guys than you think) you will end up going back to the Fleet in another job you many never have thought about because of the needs to the Marine Corps or any other branch for that matter. I think it is a 6 year commitment for aviation in general.

As the Girlfriend part- The Military can careless about girlfriend no matter how long you have been together. It is either Married or Signal in the military. It is a legal thing, and benefits Insurance Etc.. So keep that in mind.

The way I read what you posted is that you have your heart set on Helo's. If this is the case I would really hope you take this into consideration. Look into the Army. They have so many jobs for Helo Pilots and there are more spots for promotions also. This is also why I say Army. If you become very good there is room to grow into the 160th SCOR. The Marine Corps or the Navy dose not get this opportunity to my knowledge(I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure about this). I can explain in more depth why off line.

Civilian Job- I can't tell you what to do about that. That will have to be made by you. Take the Pat Tillman factor into account. He had it all pretty much just waiting for him, he chose to serve and pass up the NFL. The girlfriend again. Family will always be there and support you, if you are sure she is "The One" then keep her. Some advise, if you do this make sure she has her shit together and has something other than the military. A career and keep her away from the Military BS as much as possible. You both will be much happier that way.

I'm sure other guys can answer more questions about other services. I'm just being as objective as possible to tell the cold hard truth about it. In the end we all get paid from the same place, we all get medical care through Tri-Care, and at the end all the checks for Ret. come from the same place. It is just a pissing contest on who is the best and who looks the best in uniform,lol.

Just look into everything before you get your heart set on one thing or another.
