How much "abuse" can these things take?

I just started driving an 09 Sport Ed. a few months ago. The car I had got totaled so my parents decided to let me drive the T4R and get my mom a new car (I'm in high school and living with my parents).

Before the 4Runner I had an old Volvo XC70 that I could beat the piss out of with no problems. The thing was a tank and held up to all my crazy driving like a champ--think 70mph on dirt over potholes sideways type stuff--even though it had 160k+ miles. I don't drive the 4Runner fast like that at all, but I do take advantage of its off-road capabilities pretty frequently. Nothing super gnarly, but a ton of washed-out, steep, rocky, and bumpy old forest roads.

How much is the 4Runner designed to take? I'm wondering when off-road driving crosses the threshold into "abuse". I baby it when I'm driving on pavement, but off-road things can get rough. I rarely max-out the clearance, but minor scrapes happen. When I hit bumps and go over obstacles it obviously works the suspension, but I see videos and pictures on here of people taking stock trucks through a lot more.

It's a nice truck, and because my parents pay for me to drive it I don't want to cost them money if I break stuff. My dad knows that I drive it off road and is fine with it, but at the same time I feel like he's trusting me with a lot of money. Last week it got its 60k mile service at the dealer and they said everything looked perfect, but I'm still kind of paranoid.

Am I in the clear?

Just use common sense. These trucks are tough as nails, because they are, well, trucks. The frame and suspension are made to withstand off road abuse to an extent. If you are worried, you could always modify the suspension, such as lifting it for more clearance. Use caution when entering water and know your truck's limits. I have taken my stock 4Runner off road only a few times. I dented the skid plate while I was at it, but that's why they're down there. Always check for leaks or funny noises after wheeling and fix problems immediately. I never had any problems, many other members here can say that as well.

My point is these trucks were designed for utility and off road abuse to an extent, and as long as you don't push it's limits, you will be fine. Good to hear you don't abuse it on the roads though. The amount of 'fun' that comes from flooring it at every traffic light isn't worth the gas and extra wear and tear IMO.

You are very lucky to be driving that truck, especially paid for by your parents. Also good to see you respect that your parents pay for it and aren't reckless with it like other kids these days are. Enjoy the truck, you have a great, tough, and durable vehicle.

Truck has more than 5k miles off-pavement in a wide range of conditions on the original suspension. No unusual rattles. The vehicle tracks perfectly straight without ever having had an alignment. One broken rear sway bar is the extent of any real damage. Plenty of cosmetic and skid plate damage of course.

One thing, though. The tires have virtually always been aired down off-pavement. I doubt the above could have held true without that but who knows. Still, I'm happy and impressed.

I'm definitely super super lucky that I get to drive the 4Runner. It's good that I was able to get all the crazy driving out of my system with the Volvo. That car was old and probably didn't have too much left on the engine so when I got backed into and it got totaled it was like perfect timing.

I went 45 off road into a ditch and my skip plate hit a tree stump stopping me right away. Bent tie rod and dented the diff a lil bit after i did alignment it drove perfectly fine. She has been jumped into mud holes and pulled threw 39 inch bogger ruts. Shes hit trees and stop signs but wont stop driving. Idles a little rough but she wont stop giving. 211,000 miles and little to no maintenance
