Out the door.
Great deal. And I thought I was getting a screaming deal with 41k otd with an msrp of 43.2k.
Out the door.
Hey guys,
2018 TRD Off Road Premium
Sun roof
Roof rack cross bar
All weather mats and cargo liner
Something the dealer called the QP package, Which consists of,
TRD Pro Wheels and Terra Grapplers
Black emblems
Black exhaust tip
TRD shifter
N-Fab Nerf bar/steps(soon to be replaced w sliders)
Maybe more, but I think that was it.
$42,000 + t&t.
I had planned to add the TRD wheels and emblems myself, but they had this one sitting on the lot with 2 miles on the ODO. They offered me the same model without the QP package for $38,850. I could had added the wheels and stuff a little cheaper obviously, but paid for the convenience and instant gratification.
This is my first post. More of a lurker, but I love the forum. Just installed a set of Spidertrax this weekend, and I have TC UCAs and a 3”/2" Toytec/Bilstein lift on the way.
Ok so, a few things:
1.) You can not "add" airbags. Every third row, or even 2nd row has side curtain air bags equipped along the length of the vehicle. They are trying to charge you for something already there. That's shady as heck.
2.) all "fees" are B.S. to begin with, and are negotiable. I would never pay a $649 fee. If they want to dicker with you over a fee and the $900 dollar difference then they don't care about your business.
3.) I would not buy from these guys, period. If you have the price quoted with a Vin take it to another dealer and have them price match or beat the 34,900.
I think you made a smart decision by walking out. Good Job! Remember, the buyer has the power, not the dealer.
Apparently they have a rear seat option that has a MSRP of $1085 and then one that’s $335. If I was to build an 4runner I’d go with the cheaper option but this one already had the higher priced option package that included some sort of airbag add on. I’ll look up the exact package tomorrow. Basically they’re car had $1200 on options I would of not added if I was to build one. So they wanted to add in those option cost on top of my original offer of $33700.
I agree that the processing fee of $650 is crazy but do people actually get out of that? The $1000 destination fee was included in the initial MSRP price so that’s included in my offer price.
The final bill would of been:
$34900 for car
$22 doc fee
$650 processing fee
And taxes/registration
I said take off the $900 and I’ll buy it and they said no so I walked out. Just wondering if the price I wanted was unrealistic or not.
I wish I knew exactly how much the dealership would make on a deal like this so I can cut all the meat off the bone besides a couple hundred dollars but that probably isn’t public knowledge and would take a insider.
I paid 41k out the door on a 2018 SR5 premium with sunroof, 3 inch lift, TRD wheels and tires, running boards, all weather mats and cargo tray, roof rack crossbars and window tint all around. That price also includes the interior and exterior protection package and prepaid scheduled maintenance for 3 years.
I’m happy with the deal I got.
So it all comes down to how you negotiate
Everytime I see someone post this I sneer; Like getting a cheaper price is somehow a magical skill that some people have and others don't.
If you are buying something specific, made in limited numbers, you are going to have less room to negotiate. If you don't want to pay what the dealer is asking, so what - they'll sell the car to the next person who wants it.
Where you live also plays a huge roll. You can buy a brand new 3 bedroom 3 bath house in Des Moines Iowa for $300,000 - that same house is $600,000 on the west coast. Of course, wages are also much higher on the west coast. I am sure a Toyota dealer that moves a few trucks a month will be willing to make a deal more than one who sells out their inventory.
Another factor is how much you value your time. I see people talking about calling dealers multiple times a day, flying here and there, shipping etc etc. All that costs $$$
Why would I want to save $2,000 when I could better use my time posting worthless drivel to a website about trucks?
negotiation is a skill
Is it? Do you think you would be able to negotiate a lower price on a house in Seattle, in the current market? Where each house has multiple offers, many waiving things like inspection? You wouldn't. Because there are 10 people in line behind you, all willing to meet the sellers demands. Same with 4Runners around here, especially TRD Pros.
It's nothing personal, it's just business.
If you don't believe negotiation is a skill, it is likely because you don't have that particular skill.
Sure, it is a skill. But, it doesn't apply in every situation. Using your VW example, you walked away from a deal you felt wasn't favorable to you - that isn't negotiation, that's called common sense. The dealer had a car, obviously of limited availability if the only one available was by order, and knew he could sell it.
Negotiating requires give and take, which requires two parties. If one side doesn't need ("or want") what the other is offering, there is no negotiation. There isn't some jedi-mind trick that allows you to persuade someone to "give you a deal." Negotiation is not having a vested (or emotional) interest in whatever it is you want to purchase. That's it.
Many people don't shop that way. They do their research, decide what something is worth to them, and then go looking for that deal.
On a personal note, I detest people that shop purely by price. It's allowed companies like Walmart to strip-mine towns of knowledgeable subject matter experts, and replace them with low-price, low-wage jobs. Instead of a Main Street full of locally owned stores, each staffed by people who loved what they do, now you get to save a few bucks at the edge of town.
I'm in negotiating hell right now in the Austin area. Dealers want $42.5K for the ORP with Offroad Upgrade Package and aren't interested in budging or even getting back with me really. I'm 100% ready to buy and am not even that obsessed with getting the very lowest possible price. I've bought 7 new cars in my life and have never dealt with dealerships like the Toyota dealerships here in this round. Yikes.
This thread is awesome, by the way.
