When registering a new vehicle purchased out of state, CA will charge you ‘use tax’ based on the city/county you reside in. They give you credit for tax already paid ( for example, sales tax in the state you purchased the vehicle) - any delta must be paid at the time of registration.

I can’t speak to Tory’s experience - great (and seems to be uncommon) that an out of state dealer would estimate CA taxes and submit paperwork on your behalf but that would definitely make the process easier.

Picked up my 2022 Army Green ORP, KDSS, Moonroof in Pueblo Colorado Dec 20th. 3k over MSRP which was cheaper than the 5K over MSRP my local dealer in Colorado Springs wanted.

Picked up a ‘22 Barcelona Red ORP at Mark Miller Toyota in downtown Salt Lake City yesterday. Paid $44814 (msrp). There was no BS which was so relieving.

I had to drive up from Vegas during a snow storm to get it but it was better than paying the 5-8k over sticker that the jokers here wanted haha

All that matters is you’re happy with your investment regardless of how much you paid. As for myself, I was not willing to pay any dealer their ridiculous mark up. I’m in Ca and purchased my 22ORP from Iowa. A local dealer wanted $15k mark up on their 22ORP. I paid $49k OTD and was delivered to my doorstep.

What dealership in iowa? In CA as well and struggling to find a "good" deal.

Honestly not the worst. Same as buying a warranty full price. There’s a link somewhere on these forums to get ToyotaCare for $500 or something crazy like that.

Open to it, there's another reply on here from someone who bought our of state, looks like the catch is smogging the truck and paying any difference in taxes.

I live in CA. I bought my 4Runner in Denver and had no issues registering or smoging it. Toyota’s are all 50 state compliant.

For CA residence if you buy in another state such as Oregon which has no sales tax. Greedy CA will make you pay for it when you register.

Nope...I tried for 3 months. 10k to 15k over MSRP - everywhere. Everything you find online is spoken for/sold.
We gave up and ended up getting a SR5 Premium at MSRP, plus options. We live in Florida and had it shipped from a dealer in Texas.

And Texas dealer added in the Florida taxes, etc and paid the state of FL. Not sure if all states or dealers are doing that.

The TRD Offroads were going for MSRP when I was looking, problem was they were none available...Only reason we got that SR5 Premium is the dealer literally just got a truck in while I was on the phone asking about a Pro they "supposedly" had...
I probably called 4 dozen dealers up and down the east coast and through the midwest to Texas! I have no idea how many emails I sent...LOL.

Good luck with the search. If you are going Jeep, Rubicon is the way to go. I've always liked Jeeps - not many people on this forum will say that though! Haha.

CA charges tax based on the registered address (state/county/city sales tax). They give you a credit for tax paid as part of the out-of-state purchase, but you may need to cover the difference if the other state isn't charging as much as your local tax would have been. CA doesn't give any credit/rebate/refund if you pay more in out-of-state tax than you would have paid for an in-state purchase.
