They'd get a trailer up to speed just fine. Controlling it would be another matter due to their lower weight and lack of suspension load capacity. They probably wouldn't do as poorly as you think they'd do though.


A BMW X5 has a 6000 lb towing capacity BTW, and the 550+ HP X5 M version tows just fine. The biggest risk with that version might be ripping the tow receiver off the back of the vehicle if you got a little crazy with a trailer hitched up.


And just to show you numbers don't tell the whole story, the X5 3L diesel twin turbo makes 425 ft-lbs of torque and 260 HP, and it's SLOWER than the "300 HP, 300 ft-lbs of torque" 3L turbo gas engine 0-60. It's also slower hitched up to a trailer when you get on both. It feels good right at that torque peak, but the powerband is narrower (i.e. a lower displacement NA V8 like the 2UZ). That whole pesky average horsepower = work thing...

Ended up getting a 179 R-pod, weighs about 3800lb fully loaded. The 4runner tows it around just fine with the stock hitch, if you had sway bars you would probably not even notice it back there. You are not going to win any races going up hills but you can hit a good 45 - 50 without pushing it to much. I drop it down to 4th on the highway and have been getting about 12-13mpg. I had a Hayden tranny cooler installed just to be safe. Now i'm just trying to figure out if i should get the trans fluid flushed or drain and filled as i am at 73k miles.
