How much do you guys pay for your oil changes?

This is my first Japanese car and previously my BMW (which I DIY) was $120+ at dealerships... $55 for DIY, and that was with 7 quarts of synthetic.

I figured with this car it can't be too expensive, so I called a shop down the road and it's $65. what??? I thought these things were supposed to be like $35. (btw, just bought this car 2 months ago).

what do you guys pay? is it worth doing it myself? also, does it have to be changed with "high mileage" oil? I have 98k on it.

I just called Toyota and they want $47 out the door. Bam might as well just do that. I think I will DIY in future, I just need this done before Friday since I'm headed to Utah for some camping :dance:
 
the girl at toyota said conventional oil, which I think is 3k between changes.

how long between changes for you guys with synthetic. bmw was like 10k-12k I think, but I always did around 6k or so. I drove 24k last year so 4 oil changes wasn't bad, but I can't imagine doing 8, assuming I have to do it every 3,000 mi!!!

This oil change will cost me $16 for Pennzoil Synthetic Platinum and an OEM filter from Toyota.

Pennzoil synthetic is $22 on Amazon shipped. There's a $10 rebate for 5 quarts. And I have two 1 quart bottles already.

They could:

Underfill = you're ****ed
Overfill = you're ****ed
Not tighten drain plug = you're ****ed
Over tighten drain plug = you're ****ed
Not even change your oil = you're less ****ed

Big risk to save $15 (at most), and 15 minutes.

Let me count the ways:
1) Stripped drain plug
2) Drain plug on but loose, so it eventually falls out, your oil drains out and maybe you burn up your engine if you don't catch it quick enough.
3) Oil Filter on but not tight - Oil leaks out and again you possibly burn up your engine.
4) Forget to put oil in - like the two above, burned up engine.
5) On a less damaging note - they either strip or forget to put all the skid pans bolts on.

Been doing my own oil changes since 1982. I'm now of the opinion that I will do a much more complete and detailed job working on my rig than anyone I pay to do it for me as long as I do my homework before I attempt something. There are good mechanics out there, but when it comes down to it, I trust myself more than I trust someone else who might be rushing, having a bad day, hung over or whatever their issue happens to be that day.

agreed. however, given I'm in a time crunch, I'll have to have them do it. I'll look up a DIY thread here for next time, which will be in probably 1.5 mo with how much I drive.

funny story. my dad's civic about 8 years ago he took to the honda dealer for service (which he never did). they changed oil, didn't tighten drain plug. on a road trip and see huge plumes of smoke behind us.... yup. emptied right out and left us stranded.

An inspiring story. You could have literally changed it in the time it took to create, and respond to, this thread.
 
My local mechanic - $21 Dino oil - basic Napa filter

Myself - $19 - Castrol or Chevron Dino oil on sale at Amazon for around $14 (5 qt jug) & Wix filter when on sale for $5.

If you buy the 10 pack of Toyota filters they come out to around $3.50 each.
 
I buy my oil at Wal-Mart and then instead of going home, I take it to the dealer to have it changed with a factory filter.

In fact, I just did this today.

$33.79 after tax for oil (One big jug and one single quart of Mobil 1 5-30).

$25.09 after tax for the oil change, filter, and crush washer thing. Looking at my receipt it looks like I wasn't charged for the filter which happens quite often. However, the dealer I went to today (lifts were not working at my normal dealer) I could actually watch them change it, and the filter was replaced. I think I'll go here from now on.

So grand total of $58.88.

I do this for a few reasons.

1. I am lazy

2. I don't care who you are, oil is messy

3. Disposing of oil is annoying

4. When I access my Toyota Owners account I have record of every single oil change I have ever had.

5. I actually like sitting in the dealership for an hour or so and watching mindless television while drinking free espresso.
