How much do you think I can sell my 4runner for?

2011 4runner SR5 2wd. Just over 5000 miles on it. These are the options that I have installed from the factory. Just curious what you guys think would be reasonable for a private party sale... or a trade in value?

Options/accessories:

Unfortunately, they don't have 2011 4runners on there. A 2010 with the same stats says $32,000

Go with KBB as a baseline. Just use the 2010. You could also try carmax.

I just listed it for $33k. I think it's reasonable after looking at some of the other listings out there.

$33K is high. MSRP was only $34,188. The Amex ZAG price for this car brand new from the dealer in your zip code is $32,100. I think I entered all the options you listed.

With 5K miles driven, and from the purchaser's perspective the possibility of accident damage, I don't think it would be worth any more than $29K.

You have to realize the KBB price always is inflated by at least the area's sales tax and often a bit more. That way the guy can buy it and go to his lender and get financing for the entire cost of the vehicle purchase including taxes.

Damn, that sucks.... I was hoping to get at least $30k. Maybe I'll list it for that and see what comes along. I got a couple of months before I get back to the states anyways.

What is that second dealer thinking? They sound like "used car salemen!" They cross out the $36,995 and have special Internet Pricing of $35,995. The customer could just walk around to the new 4Runners on the lot and buy one for less.



On a related note, I drove past a Toyota dealer in SoCal and they had and advertisement for $6000 off on a 2011 4Runner.

Now that you've decided to sell it, contact the dealership you bought it from and see if you can work something out with them, you definitely have some leverage working in your favor there. Also since you're a service member contact USAA. There are USAA certified dealerships that will lower the price of the vehicle based on your service. It's best to get that price locked in before you go in for a test drive or purchase because they might not honor the price once they have you there... I wouldn't know anything about that!?! HAHA... I ended up getting my TE for 37K before taxes!!! Which was about 3k below the sticker price. I couldn't be happier with it so far! Also I had a 2001 2WD 4Runner for ten years before my TE and miss it terribly. Good luck and take your time making this decision, either way you're still driving a 4Runner and that's not so bad!

FYI I sold my 2010 Limited a few months ago for $37,000. It had 30,000 miles on it. It sold with a transferable 120k mile Toyota platinum warranty.

I couldn't have been happier with the resale value.

I'm selling it to get a Trail Edition!! So I'm not forsaking the 4runner! Anyways, ciaz, did you sell yours through private party? If so, how? That's amazing resale value. I doubt I'll be able to get a really good sale on it, but I also haven't sold many cars. I went in and did the USAA thing to get this 4runner. I only got it for $31.8 though. I don't know if I got too awesome of a deal.

Ciaz, I just read your thread about selling your 4runner. It's funny because I was in the exact same boat as you when it came to buying the 4runner. I had an '05 Infiniti G35 coupe 6 speed MT. It was completely decked out with nav, sports package, sunroof, etc. What an awesome car to drive. I sure to miss it from time to time.

I got black lab a couple of years ago and I couldn't watch him tromp around on my leather anymore. That, and I needed something I could use. I was tired of getting stuck, or being afraid of bottoming out on a dirt road... so I decided to get a 4runner. I wish that I would've done my research because I would've ended up getting a Trail. Now I'm stuck with a 2wd baseline model that got stuck in it's first winter.

I'm looking forward to upgrading.

Trade it in. You will have to sell it at >$2K of the trade-in value given the sales tax credit you get on a trade to just break even with private party, and that's forgetting the huge hassle involved with selling it. I traded a 2010 SR5 for a 2011 LTD and the trade-in value made it a no brainer.

You only pay sales tax on the delta between the new car price and what you traded your car. If you sell private party, you will pay sales tax on the full new car price.

Trade-in

New car: $35000
Trade-in: $30000
Sales tax: 0.05*($35000-$30000) = 0.05*($5000) = $250

Private sale

New car: $35000
Sales tax: 0.05*($35000) = $1,750

I didn't have to when I sold my motorcycle a few years ago. Also, I had to pay sales tax on the full value of the 4runner when I bought it. Even though I traded another car in for it. Because I thought about the same thing when I bought it.

All states vary. Check your state for details. Here in WV we have to pay just like Quintin said - the delta on difference between trade and new or in the case of selling it outright we have to pay sales tax on the full amount.
