How much drop in hitch mount?

Hey everyone,

I have pulled many a trailers growing up, but I never had to buy new products, just hook up and haul.

I recently got a new 4runner, and will be making the virgin trailer trip soon. I need to pick up a hitch mount and ball for the runner. I will be using a Uhaul trailer, so I know they could most likely sell me what I need there, but I am not completely confident that they know exactly what is correct. They just want to make a sale.

SO:
Do I want a hitch mount with a 2" drop or a 3 1/4" drop?

I know that it depends on if I have a lift, how big the trailer, etc. But without going and looking at the trailer, is there a way to know?
The runner is stock, 2014. The Uhaul trailer is a 4x8 cargo trailer.

Factor in some settling if the truck/hitch height from weight in the trailer and go from there. The uhaul prices aren't that bad.. But if you have to buy prior I would go 2" drop and get it from Walmart as one of the Reese kits

I have 3 different ball/receiver setups depending on the trailer. All are different drops & ball sizes.

I figured that would be the best way to check, measure the difference between hitch and trailer. But if I want to get the hitch mount and ball before I get to the Uhaul store, is there another way?

Call them and ask for the tongue height?

What ebg said. If you're renting from UHaul, call them and ask them instead of guessing or relying on thirdhand info from anonymous strangers who may or may not know what they're talking about.

Or just buy an adjustable hitch. :thumb:

I don't have stock in uhaul, most of them do sell hitch accessories if it's a full uhaul store. There are some gas station types that rent uhaul too. Those might not sell the accessories. Technically couldn't you return that hitch mount after you used it and say it didn't work?

Hey is your runner a v8? I know my hitch mount is very short. I stick a hitch mount into it and it will hit the spare tire before I can stick the pin in.

sorry missed the 2014 part. im thinking you might have a 4th gen.
