How much rust is too much?!

So I'm debating between 2 4runners. A 2007 sport 4wd and a 2008 limited. Both v6. I live in CT so obviously rust is an issue. I looked underneath and the frames look okay. Some surface rust near welds but nothing that looks ridiculous, but, I'm also not an expert. Can someone post pictures or lead me in the right direction on what to look for and what's common and not common. Thanks in advance!

Why don't you post pictures of the vehicle in question? You'll get varying answers from everyone on what's acceptable and what isn't, but best to see what the rust in question looks like.

Definitely check all around the frame welds where the rear control arms attach and the support under the radiator where the front skid clips in. Both of those have rusted to hell on my New England 4Runner.

Check for rust around the rear window seal and the sunroof seal too while you're at it.

looks pretty normal for a NE 4runner. Just tap the frame with something and makes sure no big flakes are falling off the frame. After a cleaning and some rust "inhibitor/prevention/killing" it should be fine. Keep in mind these vehicles are approaching 10 years or more of life in the rust belt. A cleaning will do wonders.

I say that to myself everytime I drop the skid plate. 10 years later and i have just started rust busting lol :couch2:

I have my 4 Runner right on lake Erie in Ohio. My frame is solid but i do have rust spots around my back window ( I've heard thats an issue for 4 runners) The body has never given me issues and mine is an 04. I may get some body work done, depends on the price.
