How Much? (Totalled)

My wife rolled my truck late last week (not a scratch on her), and I'm waiting for the insurance company to tell me it's totalled. In the meantime, I know the insurance game from my dealings with older collector cars. I need to do my best to get a representative sample of the market price for similarly equipped rigs in similar shape. Luckily, I had only had it since April, and hadn't had much free time to do much in terms of modifications, so it was for all intent and purpose stock.

The rig:

- '99 SR5
- 5-speed
- factory locker
- leather
- power everything
- tow package
- all maintenance records including oil changes and even tire rotations pretty much from new with everything up to date
- never wrecked (all panels had unmolested VIN stickers matching and in tact)
- the negative points were a few dents in the rear bumper that were visible if you caught them in the light, and some wear in the driver's floor mat at the pedals (aka in REALLY good shape)

Has anyone purchased a similar rig in the past 12 months (or ever)? Where, how much, how was yours different? Has anyone seen ads (with the same series of details requested)? What were the prices?

miles and region determine alot of the price

5speeds with under 150k in my area are $8-$12k, i was in the market for over a month actively searching and leaving my number at dealers for possible trade ins

I also just bought mine last week with 135k miles and was in that price range, mine didnt have e-locker or leather, when i went to the DOL to get it registered they gave me a price of $8900 as value even though KBB and NADA with $1000 or more less then that value
 
Oh yeah! ~147K miles at the time of the accident. Location is Rocky Mountains west of Denver.

KBB, NADA, and the lot all have it at $7,150... Then their own classifieds fail to list anything close to that... My own shopping around turns up high mileage base model 2WDs in that price range... Laughable.

Spectre, I'm sorry to hear this, and glad your wife is okay. I was looking forward to your unique mods and how they applied to our rigs. While I love my 98, I'm jealous of a 5-speed, rear locker set up. From what I've heard, these rigs cost more in regions like Colorado cuz they're in demand. 7,150$ does seem laughably low. I know there's quite a few guys on here from your area, and they're in a much better position to help you out. Good luck man, and hopefully one day soon, you'll have another 3rd gen you can play around with.
 
I would say at 147k with elocker, leather, 5speed, clean body, and good records around $7500-$9500

I would just tell the insurance company that "market value" is $10,000 if you where to find one like it again, possibly even cost more

elocker+5sp hard to find, i would explain that to them

Dont settle for KBB/NADA because the t4r/tacomas are always selling for more
 
One thigh that really helped me in this same situation was some advice from a friend who works for an insurance agency. Get on auto trader cars .com etc and find multiple 4runners that have the same packages, options, and etc and insist that you get more then what they're selling for since yours was that plus the great shape. In my case the 2wd was a bonus because in pa there actually pretty rare, so my not wanting to maintain' a 4wd system was a bonus to me.

This should also help you as yours was 5 speed and had a locker. They'll tell you they have they're market values and crap but just insist that all you want from them is to replace the truck you already had.

And also Any! Mods/maintenance/care receipts you have use as ammo as money that you have put into the car.

I got another 450 for some cheap eBay clear corners brian2sun gave me, a block heater that found on it and some bfg ATS that the dealer put on before they sold it. And I didn't have a receipt for any of them. And I even feel like I could have gotten more for it but I needed the check soon to replace it.

So in short, find others like it, insist that yours was in way better shape and prove it with receipts and such, and play hard ball. Don't settle for the first second ir even third offers they give you.

I spent a good part of the morning looking, and have yet to even find a truck with the trappings that made mine what it was... I have seen prices for trucks that were CLOSE (fabric seats or no locker or auto, etc.) as high as $12K, but very few close to the $7,150 book value (and those were in no way similar to mine)... I've saved PDFs of ads, bookmarked threads (including this one), etc. One thing I have yet to find is one of the myriad threads where people ask what year, etc. is most desirable. Those inevitably turn up '99 (highest stock suspension), manual with locker (factory 4.30:1 diff)...

Edit: Forgot the SC in the "most desirable" list... Mine didn't have that...
 
Location plays a big role but having had a Runner totaled a little over a year ago I do know you can negotiate. So if the insurance gives you a low price refuse the first offer. Worked for me.
 
What did you pay for it 6 months ago? I notice nowhere in your post do you mention that.

I'd say its worth $500 less than you paid when you bought it.

yep, that should be one of his data points.

If you paid 7k for it, its not worth 12k a few months later. The ask price might be 12k in Seattle, but they are worth maybe 7k.
 
What I paid six months ago doesn't exactly have any bearing on the greater market. I could have seriously over or under paid. As a single data point, I paid something like $9,400 off the top of my head.

I agree. Regardless of how rare it is or meticulous it was maintained, no judge would give you a dime over what you paid. But that's a judge, and you aren't suing...
 
what he actually paid for the truck should have absolutely no impact of what he gets for the truck. Say it was handed down from his parents. Since he technically got it for free, does that mean it's not worth anything? Use your brains, boneheads. I used to drive a little beater Saturn a few years ago when gas was like a billion dollars a gallon. It was an all-around POS, but people were paying a premium for them since they got 35+mpg. Anyways, it got hit in a parking lot during a snow storm and was totaled. KBB was only like $900, but I printed a bunch of adds from auto-trader and craigslist for similar cars with similar mileage in my area. I ended up getting $2,800 for the car, which was almost 3x's what I paid for it. Print a bunch of adds for SIMILAR trucks, and use it to your advantage.
 
That's correct. Insurance companies don't compensate you for what you had in the vehicle, they give you the amount of money that would be required to purchase a comparable replacement. If you were to purchase a brand new BMW (or some other vehicle that depreciates faster than others) with a thirsty V8, drive it for nine months (still within the same model year), but put 20K miles on it, and further suppose there is another economic meltdown during those nine months making thirsty expensive cars very undesirable (the opposite of what happened to BlackCat914), there aren't many insurance companies that will pay out enough to purchase another new BMW. You'd get something on the order of 60% (or whatever the depreciation on a new BMW would be in that scenario), or enough to buy a used BMW with 20K miles.

I need to find out approximately what it would cost to buy a similar truck in a now timeframe. In other words, what would an unmolested, relatively low mileage, manual, locked, leather, etc. truck be listed and subsequently sold for as close to here and now as possible (I won't have the luxury of waiting months for the right one to come up and be able to negotiate it down like I was able to the last time).
 
i got 8.5k for mine with 250k on the clock having been in an recorded accident before hand.

sorry to here that man, i feel your pain, all of that work, time and effort down the tubes, hopefully you'll you get what you deserve out of the deal, you've been here with us for a bit and hope you'll replace your runner and stay for a bit longer.
 
As long as it's remotely similar to mine, that sort of stat is very helpful. Please state though how it differs from mine (ie. Izzardking's being a Limited with high mileage and a wreck). Finding a rig substantially similar to mine for the purposes of convincing the adjuster to give me a fair price is going to be difficult given the timeframe... Even with a market as big and focused as Denver.

Also, ZERO rust on my rig...
