How much weight is too much

So I cannot get my 33” tires balanced properly. Here is a pic of the inner front driver’s side from my last “balance” at Discount.

Not sure if bent rim or out of round tire. Has anyone else received this much weight before?

That much weight is not right and it shouldn't have left the shop that way.

When I was younger and busted tires, any time that amount of weight was needed, the bead was broken and the tire was spun on the wheel 180° and then the balancing was re tried. If that didn't work we would swap the tire to a different wheel and see if that would balance. If that didn't, we would look for a damaged wheel or try a different tire.

that is definitely too much weight. would go back and have them take the tire off, and spin just the wheel, that should tell you if its the wheel, or the tire...but I've never worked at a tire shop so i may be off in my suggestion.

plus to me, it doesn't make sense that weights would be placed 180 degrees from another weight....that means the original weight was incorrect (i think???)

Holy shit! [emoji43]
I would have to agree- if it needs that much weight, there is either a wheel or tire issue. And yeah, those weight are real close to being 180* from each other. Hard to make sense of that.

That guy went full retard on your wheel! LOL

On one of my 35" tires it took some crazy amount of weight (originally it was somewhere like 18 oz). I had them move that tire to my spare wheel BTW.

But instead of spreading out so much hammer on weights, why didn't they try to consolidate to one area using stick on weights? Yes, some say they can come off, but personally I never have.

To reply to everybody: no I-freakin-dea why they did this. This tire has three weights on the other side as well. Tomorrow I’m gonna get hissy at the counter. A buddy has some 5 star rims he’s gonna hook me up with in case it’s the tires, since this is plain ridiculous.

Sonova... finally took it in to Discount Tire. They noticed some cupping on a couple of the wheels that could contribute to vibration, but nothing else other than "my tires being cheap". The weights on that wheel are back to three total, which is good, but it doesn't feel any better..at all. FSCK! I'll try my friend's spare set of five stars and wranglers tomorrow.

If a tire asked for that much weight on the balancer, the tires probably severely out of round, damn near square really. A 33" tire rarely takes more than 4oz balanced static, or 5 oz total balanced dynamic. That's allowing for a wheel that is slightly out of round. Keep in mind that's a generalization, but a solid rule of thumb.

I'd guess that the shop you're going to is now trying to cover their asses by coming up with a reason after the fact. Cupping on a mud tire is super obvious, you'll notice abnormal wear, especially towards the edges, and if you run your hand over the tire you'll feel high and low spots, a smoothly worn tire won't try to grab your hand at all.

Whatever issue you're having is likely not going to be remedied until that tire is replaced.

Would one tire really make the entire truck ride like garbage? I’m gonna experiment with removing the spacers and whatnot. I do have spacers, forgot to mention that. I’d imagine that amplifies any problem that comes with having junk tires.

Depending on how bad it is, yes it can. Especially if it is on the front axle. Any speed over 45 mph you'll have a noticeable vibration. Spacers can amplify vibrations, especially if you're running lug centric spacers.

OP, just curious what your wheel/tire combo is? And how many miles have you put on them before this recent attempt at balance?

No shit.

That should be the photo for the poster that says "Don't Let Discount Tire Near Tires"

I find Discount Tire (as well as many other chain stores) varies quite a bit from store to store. There are two within reason of where I live. One I've always got less than stellar service, while the other is really dialed. I'm guessing a lot of that is on the store managers.

One word "hezuz"!!!

I had duratrac's and fuel boost wheels on my 5th and 3rd gen. They had so much trouble balancing at Discount & Les along with ma-pa shops. I gave up. They road horrible but only at 60-68 mph speeds. I recently switched from the Duratrac's to BFG KM2 M/T's and have zero shake/vibe anything. I replaced duratrac's that got damaged did all sorts of things to try to fix it and just couldn't get it fixed.

My suspicion was the tire/wheel combo just doesn't work. Reading a lot of this + that online helped lead to this theory.

If they do a tire to wheel match on this tire that should fix the problem ... It seems the high spot of the tire is mounted on the high spot of the wheel and need to be reversed .... Of course it takes time to diagnose this but if they have a high end balance they should be able to measure the run out to determine the best location for the wheel on the rim.. Basically what is happened here is the balancer has detected a fake vibration and is trying to compensate for this which u get much added wheel weights like your example. here is a video that basically explains the process and gives u a visual https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KvRft422G4

Gotcha. I mean they got it down to three weights on the outside. I'll have to snap some more pics later.

OEM 3 spokes with P285 Falken Wildpeak AT3s. I didn't think it was that bad of a tire, but man, they're just loud on the road compared to other AT tires. I bought the truck with these tires on it. Rode like crap. Had it balanced. Still rode like crap. Had it balanced. Rode much better for a while. Drove it probably 1400 miles like that. Noticed it felt like crap, yet again. Had it balanced. Rode worse. Drove it like that for 100 miles. Took it back, had it balanced, rode like crap for the whole trip that I took to Amarillo..probably another 400 miles. Had it balanced. Rode less like crap for my trip from Amarillo, to Little Rock.

I'd remove the spacers, but I just think that I'd sacrifice more on road stability and it would just look horrible with a 3" lift. Unless anyone has pics/experience otherwise.

Have you added a big slug of "slime" to the tire or another sealant? Sometimes the sealant can "puddle" or jell in one location and cause a big imbalance.

TT

I'd yank the spacers and see what happens. Obviously that's not why they added so much weight, but like others have said it can definitely magnify the issue. I think 285's are plenty big enough for both the stability and looks issue. You may run into some rubbing though depending on what you had to do to run them as they sit now.
