How much weight on the roof is too much?

I bought my 1986 4runner and it has two cross bars on the roof and due to busy schedule I haven't had time to really explore and have fun in it, I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to how much weight is safe to put up there or how much you normally carry. Im considering kayaks and etc.

I know the 2nd Gen factory rack is only rated for a paltry 100 lbs. (I know, pretty pathetic). I'm sure they're just being overly conservative for liability purposes, but I haven't seen any numbers for a safe heavier load. Aftermarket racks have beefier mounts and crossbars, so they should be good for quite a bit more. Kayaks are a piece of cake, even for the factory stuff. Just remember, whatever you put up there is affecting your vehicle's balance point, so don't get crazy with heavier items.

Load her up! assuming you are not mounting to the roof with a pair of wood screws. We travel horribly rough washboard at excessive speeds with this runner- no issues with roof or raingutters.
