How much would you pay for this runner?!

His price probably isn't too far off if he'd fix the body damage to the tailgate. That body damage takes him under $3000 in my opinion.

I'm considering buying a 1986 4Runner with the 22RE. The owner states that it burns a quart of oil every 150 miles. I'm trying to figure out what kind of repair or rebuild I'd be looking at if I buy it and if its worth it. The price is $1500, 226K miles, good body, tranny 4wd etc... any help?

I only paid $1,500 for my '86 with about the same mileage.
Of course it turned out to be cheaper to SAS it than fix all the problems I found in the front end and steering.
The "it only needs a valve job" rattle turned in a full rebuild with a replacement crank and head.
About a million other little problems too.
Still the best $1,500 I ever spent, never regretted it for a minute

I really am not sure how much. Probably better that way
Around 1500 for the engine rebuild.
All the good stuff came from an 83 pickup that I had built as a crawler, better tranny, dual t-case, front axle, high steer, springs and shocks.
All the work was done myself and with friends. That saved a ton of money.
If you don't like working on them almost as much as driving them, 30 year old trucks might not be for you!

Oh, and it is a manual. I like shifting better than autos except in a dedicated crawler.
I really don't know much about Toyota autos. The one in my wife's 06 Tacoma has been trouble free. I had a GM tranny in the crawler.
I also know rust sucks, how is the one you are looking at surfsage?

So, everyone who lowballed this one ended up being right! My friend bought it for 4500... got it home but the engine light went on on his drive home. Code came up EGR related. Tells the seller who mysteriously offers my friend the new cat that he has for free... After passing smog my friend takes what seems to be a great truck in for registration. FAIL. Truck is in salvage retention... That ding on the tailgate was enough to make it a salvage title but the seller sold it as a clean title. Friend threatened to take him to court, seller coughed up 1000 dollars and mysterious new tailgate lol. I guess the lesson here is that 1st gens in good condition are really hard to find and unless you are a mechanic, definitely take it to one before buying.
