How often do you clean your MAF sensor?

Normally I have great low end torque and acceleration. Recently I noticed hesitation when accelerating from a stop. It seemed like the engine is bogged down or flooded. Initially I suspected a bad TPS since I just cleaned and tested the MAF sensor a few months ago and recently did all the plugs and wires. I went ahead cleaned the MAF again just in case and it seemed to resolve the issue...still isn't a 100% but a huge improvement. Do most people clean their MAF every few months? What causes the MAF to get dirty? I currently have an AFE dry flow air filter.

I'm also planning on replacing the TPS sensor anyway. The bottom screw is a PIA to get to and if I'm going through the trouble to test it I might as well replace it. I have a 1996 base auto 4x4 with the 2.7 3RZ FE.

I've never cleaned it, and mine runs like a champ at 250k. Aftermarket filters definitely have an affect on the MAF. Any filter that flows more than OEM is going to let more particles through.

The problem is not the more particles as these just go by the sensor without sticking.

Its the crap oil people spray (and people spray to much) that gets on the sensor and then dirt sticks to it. After time it can kill the sensor.

That being said I use only dry aftermarket filters and have never had to clean mine. I did it for good measure and hit it with cleaner when ever I wash my air filter.

I did it last summer for the first time. 16.5 years & 161,000 miles but I've never used an oily filter.

Yeah works fine on speed density equipped cars.

I clean the MAF and throttle body when I change my spark plugs since I remove the air box/intake to get to the spark plugs anyway which is usually every 30k.
