How smooth is your 4Runner?

So I finally got my 265/70/17 Nittos mounted, and Ive always been alittle leery of tire shops. My truck used to have some vibration at highway speeds, but I assumed it was due to the crappy unmatched tires that it came with. Now, after mount, balance and alignment, it still shakes some. At around 70mph, theres a slight steering wheel vibration. Its not really that bad, but Ive always been paranoid about work done to my vehicles at a shop. Am I being tooo paranoid? Or am I just still getting used to not driving a small 4cyl car anymore?

Last time i had a slight vibration at that speed turned out to be a bad wheel bearing.. Lift up the front and check to see if your wheel bearings are still good..

Mine is perfectly smooth. Give those tires 1000 miles or so then have them road-forced balanced with the correct adapter for toyotas.

My '04 is perfectly smooth at all speeds. I also have the same size tires but in a highway tread. I did however at one point have an intermittent vibration that turned out to be a sticking brake caliper. It warped the rotor so whenever the caliper stuck the vibration and shaking of the steering wheel occurred.

I suspect that if your vibration is consistent and always occurs at a certain speed than the problem is either your wheel balance, suspension or drive shaft.

I'm not sure where you live, but down here in SoFL the highways and roads are the epitome of our aging and failing infrastructure, and despite four brand new tires and an alignment, I still get some vibration at highway speed. Again, I attribute it to our crappy roads.

Would love to take my 4R on the German autobahn. :thumb3:

I guess i should have mentioned, the tires are not brand new. A friend gave them to me, but they are still in really good shape. I figured the shop would have mentioned something if there was anything wrong affecting balance or alignment, but then again, it was the last job of the day on a Friday.
What else could be causing steering wheel vibes?

I would respectfully disagree and suggest taking your 4R back to the tire shop and have them re-balance the tires.

Every set of tires I've bought that were properly balanced run perfectly smooth at all speeds from the moment I've driven away.

The problem with giving them 1K miles is the imbalance will cause uneven wear and make them even worse.

Hmm. I think we've found the problem. Why would they care or say anything since you didn't buy the tires from them? You brought them into the shop on Friday and said, mount and balance (and quick; I've got a hot date!). :biggrin1:

That changes things. How many miles on them? Why did your friend remove them in the first place?

Not sure of the milage, but they are in good shape. He took em off to get 38's after he lifted is Cummins Ram

My 2008 Urban Runner is so smooooooth both on how it rides and after I detail it out with claybar and Meguiars Ultimate wax, it can only be compared to as being as smooth as a fine drink or a beautiful sexy woman

No vibration

I replaced my OEM tires at 68K. My new tires installed at a tire shop do not vibrate at any speed. I have had them up to mid-eighties with no problems. They are a touring tire warranted to 70K.
