The ABS on my 97 3rd gen has already scared the crap out of me a couple times by kicking in when it really shouldn't be. I have read some discussion on here with people saying the same thing and that it is probably a bad sensor. I will eventually replace the sensor, but in the meantime, is there a way to easily disable ABS so I don't die? Thanks.

You could always eliminate the ABS all together....

You could alway pull the relay that's in the fuze box under the hood. Going to have to take the box in order to do it though. Then take the two bolts that hold the relay in there out, and wa-la. No ABS. Then, when you replace whichever sensor is bad, just do the opposite to and put the relay back in..

The easiest way to disable the ABS is to pull the fuse. However, you have to unbolt the fuse block first and flip it upside down so you can unscrew the ABS fuse from underneath. Then you can pull it out. My 97's ABS was crap so I pulled my fuse years ago and never missed it on or off road, much better w/o it. BTW, the ABS dash light will always be on.
I'm sure a few people with later 3rd gens will think this is bad advice, but I know how the early 3rd gen ABS feels and it can be dangerous.

Most people today don't even know this. But, without ABS, your brakes will lock up very easily in an emergency stopping situation. Locking up causes you to skid and lose control.
So. If you pull your ABS, try to get in the habit of pumping the brakes to develop the muscle memory. In an emergency, SLAM brake situation, it sounds counter... but you want to very quickly pump the brakes to prevent lock up.
Lock up actually decreases stopping performance.

In the middle of a snowstorm 2 winters ago, I yanked my sisters ABS fuse out from the top and just broke it. I'd forgotten to take the fuse box loose and take the broke part out until now. lol.
And you just need to pull the bulb in your dash. In the 96-98 4Runners, I can heartily recommend simply pulling the fuse and pulling the bulb. You will NEVER miss the ABS in the early trucks.
As everyone else has said, best thing you can do with a '96-'97 4Runner, pull the fuse and then pull out the ABS light in the dash. Did mine a year ago and my truck has been much safer for it. It was downright scary prior to that, even when the ABS was working as designed....

I'm thinking about pulling in on my '00 the ABS seems to kick in too often in places it shouldnt. I'll be under heavy braking down hill getting off a ramp and it'll sometimes kick in
