I know this post is "archival" now, but thank you for taking the time to put this information together. I just recently purchased an '86 SR5 and the passenger seat cables are broken...I'll be putting this tutorial to work in short order.

Hey I thought, since I found a solution that worked I would just put it up here just as a simple fix for a common problem, thanks for reading though.

Thanks I like the solution bro. Question as I am about to fix mine on an '85.
It looks like the 3 barrel connector is only using 2 cables now and you basically directly connected the rotating latch from one rail to the opposite rail by anothe r cable?
My unit has 1 'input cable' controlled by releasing the seat back to spring forward and so pulling on the 'Y' or 1 to 2 barrel which of course pulls on the 2 cables to release the 2 latches (one on each r/h and l/h rails.
Unless of course Toyota changed the design after 1985...... ?
