I have both an 01' Tacoma and an '01 4Runner. Both are the 3.4l. The Tacoma is a 5 spd and the 4Runner is an auto. The Tacoma has a LOT more off the line power over the 4Runner, but the 4Runner coasts at freeway speeds at a significantly lower RPM. I always figured it was the difference in gearing between the 5 spd and the auto.
I hope this works! I'd love to have a little of both worlds.

I'll bet the FSM only recommends replacing the IAC because it's a relatively expensive part and Toyota would rather sell you a new one than clean the old one. I have cleaned mine at least 4 times over the years and it always helps and it was pretty gunked up every time. That gunk definitely hinders the movement of the valve, especially after letting it build up for 10 years.

Thought I'd add my testimonial too......Just tightened all the cables, and man did it help with Throttle response!

Didn't realize how much slack I had until I gave it a couple turns and tightened everything up. Used to have to push down on the gas probably 3/4 of an inch before I saw the cam move, now its probably closer to only an 1/8" or so (Hair Trigger Style
)
Just as a note, I was afraid I may have tightened it to much because my idle used to be around 500, and now its at about 700. But according to the HM, idle speed for the 3.4 should be between 650 and 750.

sorry for the OT- i have the cruise control cable that leads to a device in my engine..i have a landcruiser prado 1997 with an identical 5vzfe engine with your 4runners.... one question si that i do not have a cruise control in my prado...no switches or buttons...

98 4runner throttle adjustment
so was doing research on how to change plugs and wires (whole other story) and ran across throttle adjustment and damn glad I did. It took less than 5 minutes and its like a whole new animal. now more having to floor it to get up the mountains or pulling out in traffic. Best part is down shifting is much smoother and easier. THANK YOU!!

I adjusted my cables the other day and found it had another benefit besides the feeling of more power off the line. Ever since my lift and new tires my truck has been eager to downshift at every little hill. Today driving to work it didn't downshift once. Tightening up the cables allows the engine to get enough gas to keep speed with a small enough adjustment that the TPS doesn't get triggered and make it downshift. Or something along those lines...

k so i got a few questions. first, i tightened my cables but there is still slack. how tight should they be. my original plan was to tighten them until they started pulling on the pulley then back off a little bit. but i moved the inside bolt all the way in then moved the outside one in and there is still slack on the cable. even with that said the difference is still noticeable. it was like driving a new runner! also can someone point me to a product to clean these? while unscrewing them dust was just crumbling off. and maybe show me the different areas i can clean. thanks again this is an awesome post. definitely sticky worthy.

Loosen up the left nut and tighten the right one. This should take the slack out of the line... This should be mod/maintenance item number one on the DIY list. Did it to my runner and it is like night and day!
Edit: noticed that you have an older year 4runner. I have a 01' that has a different cable set up but it should be the same in removing the slack, loosen then tighten.
