How to get better throttle response FOR FREE!

I replaced my throttle cable (not free mod)

over the past 18 years... of 3rd gen ownership... I have had the same thing happen now on each truck. I shot a quick vid of what happens to the throttle cable and IMO the throttle cable is not stretching at all. it's the rubber cushion they put under the foot pedal to smooth out the throttle response that goes bad.

Thank you so much! Such a big improvement after replacement.

2000 4runner throttle cable assembly - YouTube

Sorry to dig up such an old thread but is there a benefit to replacing the cable rather than just tightening up the slack with the adjustment section near the throttle body?

Not likely, just tighten the throttle cable a bit, don’t read into it to much. The most common cause of this slack is the metal mount on the intake bends and slacks off usually from over tightening.

Oh sorry, I should have been more specific. My throttle cable has the same issue described a few posts up regarding the rubber bushing under the gas pedal wearing out creating more slack in the throttle cable. The bushing can’t be replaced by itself so the whole cable assembly must be replaced. I was wondering if the rubber bushing did much or if it would work just as well to have the slack taken up via adjustment.

Ah I see, not sure you would have enough adjustment without the rubber, personally I’d use rubber hose and tape to replace the rubber, or bend the intake cable mount slightly and adjust as needed, of course the “kick down cable” line pressure cable would need to be adjusted aswell to compensate for the tweaked mount.

There’s a spec for the trans pressure cable. Protector protrudes so many mm. It’s not much.

You could probably just adjust it and not replace it. TPS is on the throttle body itself. I’ve done that for over a year now since the rubber cushion was busted.

That said, I do have a new one, only because I’ve changed everything else on this 4runner so why stop now…

There's only two reasons to replace the cable outright:

1. There's damage to the cable sheathing and the cable binds up and won't open or close the throttle.
2. The cable has stretched to the point that there is no thread left to tighten the cable.

I had 2. happen on mine so bought a new cable. Throttle feel is relatively unchanged, maybe a tad bit less resistance but the slack was no longer an issue.

That's my understanding as well. And even if you've got a little cable stretch, you can eliminate slack by replacing/repairing (or even extending) that little rubber grommet on the pedal-end of the throttle cable. Throttle response is unchanged. Just no play:

Nice, thank you! Good to know that I can use that rubber hose trick if the throttle cable stretches out more (I already used up most of the adjustment threading).
