So I picked up a very good friend from the Anchorage airport here last night. We got through the deep snow to her place about 14 miles away and when we got there, her driveway had two feet of powder over ice. Not one to travel light she had 4 suitcases in the back of my Runner. So I said I would back into up to the garage. She said "I don't think so". About 10 feet into the maneuver all four wheels are slipping and she says "not gonna make it........I said hold on there. Calmly like pouring a fine wine, I put it into neutral switched to 4Low put it into reverse and backed all the way up putting the Beast about a foot from her garage door.

She smiled, looked over and said "Nice".

Will post some pics as soon as we dig out. storm total 30 inches.

Start w/ one thing & eliminate possiblities till it works.

Slow & steady on the throttle does the trick.

In my 80-series I used to lock the diffs one at a time as wheels started to slip: center, rear, front. The worry was that if I got stuck like that it would take a dozer to pull me out. Luckily, I was working construction, and there were plenty of dozers.

So if you have everything locked, go slow, because if you get stuck you're really stuck.

Doesn't our center diff lock automatically in 4LO? I'm still learning, had my 4R a couple weeks now.

Nope! Works just like hi. It is unlocked untill you press the button ot lock it.

That's awesome, I had to add that button on my 80. 4LO unlocked is very handy for hooking up to a trailer, which I used to do every morning in the dark.

I assume you just depress the lock switch to lock, while in gear?

Also, depress again just to unlock, while in gear also?

Do you switch out of 4Lo in neutral?

I know all of this info is on the visor...just asking to ask.

Does anyone know whether these Toyota guidelines for shifting are posted anywhere on a Toyota site?

is there some manual or place where i can read up about how to deal with different weather or terrain?

im a noob at cars, but i have a v6 4runner and i have no idea when to switch to 4lo or lock/unlock or what any of these things mean. so i dont even know when to use them effectively. winter is here and im sure weather will get bad, so i wanna learn how to drive properly.

A friend was telling me about how another guy at work bought a Ford SVT Raptor and that it has 4Lo with a locking diff and is a snow machine.

I just said.... yeah, my 4Runner has that too.

You might want to do a search. I think Thai has a comprehensive post on this. What year is your V6>?

^^^well i'm down here in Richmond, VA, and you will soon see how to use your 4-Hi and 4-Lo if you venture out in this snow we are getting hammered with...be careful though with the power to the wheels..lol...

and you also just described why buying a used 4Runner is such the deal b/c most people never even try their four wheel drive..

have fun with it...make sure have a tow trap with you and a shovel (blankets) if you get stuck this weekend!
