anybody know if a bad spiral cable will cause a clicking sound in the steering wheel?
Yes you will when you rotate the steering wheel left or right. Your horn may also not work, and your airbag lamp stays on constantly. When you hear the clicking sound it means that the flex cable has broken completely off from the internal connector. This is a non repairable item.
Don't pay inflated prices for this item. Shop online for best deals. Be aware that multiple part numbers will work with your particular vehicle. Make sure you match the connectors before ordering.

piggybacking this. There's no need to get OEM here. Mine was broken so i got a $45 aftermarket one off ebay and it's been working fantastically!!

False. I pulled mine after it had gotten ripped in half and soldered it back together and worked like a charm.

Is there a reason to suspect the clock spring when the cruise control doesn't work but the horn does and there's no airbag light? I'm leaning towards it being more in the cruise control switch, but I'm not sure which way to go about diagnosing.

just disconnect the battery, then take your airbag off and see how the wires look they can be cut or something
my horn wire was cut in half
if there fine then it probably is your spiral cable

My cruise magically started working again after a muffler change, rear diff leak fix, and extended breather mod lol. Must be those gremlins...
Actually, I'm more frustrated because I didn't figure the culprit out, so now it's just waiting to not work on me again when I want it most.

Thanks for the write up. Airbag light has been on and off last few weeks. Had the codes read and it was B1181, B1150, and B1152. Hoping it is just this spiral cable clock spring. I am not about to pay $800 for the dealership to do it. I have seen them for $11-$12 on ebay but I think I will go with the $100 ones. Not sure I trust it that cheap!

9 days after replacing my steering rack I was pulling into a tight parking space and all of a sudden my horn started going off by itself. I was able to stop the honking but could not find why it happened. Then on the way home my steering wheel was making crispy crunchy noises when turning and the turning signal was skipping beats.
No airbag light, no cruise control light.
Eventually the horn honking got more persistent and I stopped driving the car and ordered myself a clock spring from ebay (original toyota was way too expensive), having narrowed it down due to the steering rack change out.
When I went back to the vehicle about a week later the airbag light and cruise control light were on.
So if anyone else has weird symptoms that are not typical, it can still be the clock spring.
And I did not have to use a steering wheel puller. Just left the nut on a thread or two and went to town whacking on the wheel until it came loose. (and I am a wee 135lb lady) So it is definitely doable for most of you out there) and I am also sure my wheel has never been off in the 19 years my car has been on the road. The only snag I ran into was getting the screw back in when assembling the bottom cover directly under the steering wheel. Easy as pie.
I am 2 weeks into the new clock spring and it is working great - now I just need to clear the airbag light still . . . meh
If someone can help a newb out - I have a cool pic of my clock spring spewing everywhere - I just haven't figured out how to upload pictures to my posts . . . :hatsoff: much obliged

The code can be cleared by removing both battery cables from the battery and touching the cables together...the cap discharge will set all PC's to day one...I haven't used a steering wheel puller in years...just smack the left n right of the wheel and it pops off...works good.

Thanks KBall. The clock spring I installed came from a 1996 T4R. The only difference from my 1998 was the clip for the airbag. I simply cut wires and spliced on the 98 clip that I had from my broken clock spring. It pays not to throw stuff away!!!!! LOL!!!! See Pix. The 96 clip is on the left.
Sorry for reviving this old thread, I'm looking for the right clock spring to fit my 96 SR5. ToyoDIY says I should get 84306-35010, but when I look at pictures on ebay (attached) it seems to show the same clip as your 98' on the right... Which wouldn't fit my 96' airbag right?

lol I was looking for aftermarket horn threads, but I'm so glad I stumbled across this.
I've driven way too many long trips with zero cruise control because of my spring. Definitely motivated to get the parts/tools and spend my day off replacing the clock spring :jump:
