How to remove rust???

Ok, so, I've been all over these forums. First, trying to figure out why I couldn't upload photos anymore. Second, trying to figure out how to get rid of my rust problem without showing the photos. Neither worked.

Honestly, I love my 4-Runner to death...but I know nothing about vehicles. Nothing. I know how to give her a decent bath, but that's it.

So now I have this rust issue that is really irritating me. I'm going to try to explain where it is in the best way I can, so bear with me...

There is the rim of my tire, and behind the spokes of the rim there is a "thing" attached to a big "circular shiny thing". Well, I just noticed that the once shiny "circular thing" had a little bit of a copper tinge to it...I ran my finger across it and a rust like color was there. Then I look closer and the "thing" that seems to attach to the "shiny circular thing" has real patches of crusty rust on it. I showed it to my Dad and he said "oh, that's the brake drum" but he knows as much about cars as I do so who knows.

SOOO, what can I do to get the rust off?? And is there any thing I can put on it to keep the rust at bay??

Ok, I'm guessing here, I'm more used to thingamabobs....

Behind the wheels there is a thing that is round with a shiny smooth surface called a rotor that has a thing attached to it called a caliper. It has brake pads that stop your truck in it. Don't mess with the shiny part, you need that to stop. Some people paint the caliper, some powder coat it. It would need to be taken off the vehicle to do so.
Get someone who knows what's what if you're going to take these things off, they stop your truck.

Love the thing-thing descriptive.

You can use the image tag to put pics up. It's that mountain with a yellow sky and sun icon thing. If you host on photobucket or like it'll do the code for you.

Here is my shiny new silver front rotor/gold caliper (96 4Runner). The spring is normally vertical, my pic is tilted.

Those are tundra brakes so your caliper would look a little different, but the same idea.
There are things called brake drums, my truck has them on the rear, I think yours doesn't have them at all.

Sounds like you're talking about "hat" of the brake rotors. You can take a wire brush to it and then paint it afterwards. When you're painting it, cover the brake rotor, which is the friction surface needed for your brakes to work.

Soooo, there is basically nothing I, myself, can do. I'm afraid to start wire brushing and painting and all that. Is there anywhere I can take it to?

Don't sand it. Here is what I did: took wheel off then used silver spray paint (black would be my 2nd option) and just covered up slight rust that was there. Two years later and still looks good. You will get overspray on brake disk but it'll clean itself up when you drive. GL.
